Propulsion system recommendations for large deep vee (55")

    Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an old school Dumas kit of the Wellcraft Scarab 38 KV (the Miami Vice boat). Was wondering what you all might recommend for power in this big girl? This boat will be a scale cruiser/wave pounder so top speed isn't the priority - run time, reliability, and fun are the goals. I'd like to keep the price point similar to (or cheaper) than the 2-stroke alternative. I love gas 2-strokes but would like to go electric on this one if I can keep it affordable.

As a reference, I looked at an Atomik 58 Cat at the LHS. 1100 KV outrunner, 180 Amp ESC, 2-3S lipos in series.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Stay away from the Outrunners. They are powerful and cheap but there is not a good way to cool them. For scale look at the Leopard Motors. Go for a larger one. You are going to need 8s to power that beast. Swordfish makes some great 200 amp controllers now. Offshore has all the gear you need.

What about outrunners with internal water cooling?

Not cheap by any means but you get what you pay for! Scorpion outrunners rock! Watercooled and i've seen these in several sizes and different kv's of Scorpion outrunners.

MHz and scorpion together make water cooled outrunners.

Out runners are quite easy to mount and cool.

There is the other option of course. Those mounts are good too.

I know, I'm just about to put one in a r2 26" deep v. I was just asked to provide an example of an outrunner with internal cooling . In his case he would need to go bigger. Ps. How well does yours go?

Not impressed at all!!!! Better off in a 22" light mono with a single lipo. Motor stem is to small and found out the stem will break off if asked to power a big prop. My 26 mono is to heavy as I beefed up the floor as it flexed to much. Most boats are on the thin side unless you strengthen the floor. I do think if you build a wooden mono on a shallow V would do ok but a deep V ? My 26 mono is a Arpro 1. I just took everything out and put a 3S Kershaw motor in with a Octura 438 prop with a single 4000 3S lipo for the h*** of it, just to see how it will do. Bench testing proved I was correct and CG is 30%.
