Basically you can go by that rule of thought.
But I run wire and bearings at the motor all the time and leave gap at strut. Wire does not want to coil up like flex as you throw thrust to it. Wire does not shorten like flex does.
Flex >>> When you leave too big of gap at the prop it wants to push and coil the flexcable at the motor end and this is why you want the stuffing as close to the motor as possible.
