The Scarab hull is 45 inches and 14.5 inches wide. No stringers or anything so I'll have some fiberglassing to do, looks like polyester resin. This will be for fun for myself of course.
New to fast electrics, looking for advice

The Apache hull pictures. Anyone replying I am not building out this hull.
And the Leopard LPB 5698 910KV with motor mount and cooling jacket for $100.Comment

If your interested, here are some pictures I took from the Benihanna Grand Prix which was held off of the New Jersey coast. These are from 1978. It's easy to see these boats in videos on YouTube, but with pictures you can see the detail.
I have more I can post if you want, just let me know.Last edited by Ken_NJ; 09-20-2013, 09:39 AM.Comment

Getting back to my 45 inch Dumas Scarab 60. I was doing some online reading and looking at other similar size boats. If I go with 5s 5000mAh batteries and use a Leopard 4092 motor 1489 Kv that should give me 27,380 rpm. And a 46mm 3 blade prop.
Any thoughts?

Hey,
Like I asked you before on page one, post #30.
How fast do you want the boat to go and for how long of a run time ?
And also where will you be running it the most,
Glassy water, Small Choppy water, Big choppy water ?Comment
-
Will be running in local lakes so for the most part I would call it glassy water, just like in your Shockwave video... http://tinyurl.com/kfwr34j Sometimes there might be a little chop like in this vid... http://tinyurl.com/mth2ofb
Would love the run time to be long as possible as this will be running for pleasure, no competition at all.
Fast? Sounds like your Shockwave in the video was not running opened up all the time as you can hear bursts of speed when you did. If your Shockwave can do 45mph then I would like to see my boat do close to that, lets say 40-45 mph. I don't need to run it as fast as your Pursuit.Last edited by Ken_NJ; 09-22-2013, 09:25 AM.Comment

the leopard 4092 is going to work quite hard in that boat, i would suggest a 5692 size motor 730kv on 10s2p. another setup would be leopard 5692 1340kv on 6s2p either will be fine. esc for the 1340 motor would be a swordfish 220/300 esc 6s max running an external cap bank.Comment

That is a big and heavy hull,
You said it is 10 lb just by it self ?
My 36" is 6 lb with everything in it, But the cells.
If you had some motors just laying around that you could try in it,
With a 180a esc or maybe a 120a and keep the prop on the small side.
Just for testing and to see what will get it moving a long and see how it handle and runs for you.Last edited by lenny; 03-16-2014, 10:45 AM.Comment

It's just a bare hull that I need to buy and install the running hardware. I don't want to use-install the Dumas hardware that came with it. Not worth the effort to try the 1412/2Y motor he gave me with it, giving that motor-esc back to him.
iridebikes247, someone local to me is selling a 5698-910 Kv with water jacket & mount new for $100. That looks like the next step up from the 5692. Here's a pic.
Maybe I should give this hull back to him and go out and buy a smaller hull like the 31" Aeromarine I started this thread with?Attached FilesLast edited by Ken_NJ; 09-22-2013, 05:57 PM.Comment

My best advice would be to first spend plenty of time looking through build threads of the type of boat you want to build. There is a huge difference in equipment to run a 45" mono as opposed to a 31". My 33" runs a 4082 on a single 6s or paralell 5s, for a good 54mph, my 45" runs a Castle 2028, with (4) 5s/5000mah packs at 65mph, they are very different boats in every way. Decide which one to build first(chances are you'll get hooked), and research some similar threads. There are valid opinions on this thread, but you're limited to a few people responding with varying experiences, a build thread may be a bit more focused.
I built my Sniper based on what a few other members did with thier own builds, and they were a big help to me.

Good advice, and accurate statement. I have been reading and looking at threads and looking for something of both size's and will continue to do so. The smaller boats seems easier to find and get information. And while I was doing my research I was hoping to get something here since I would think there are very experienced people on the forum.Comment

You should start a build thread and ask for more input on this hull there,
Their should be a lot more help and info from other members there.Comment

If I started a build thread what do I start building? The outside of the boat? Before I do that I need to drill holes for running hardware, install it, seal it, sand it, etc. before finishing it. I'm sure the running hardware would be universal and it would be the battery-motor-esc that would vary. If I did start I need help choosing the running hardware.
Would be GLAD to do a build thread. I'm no slouch when it comes to quality builds. If you know the classic offshore powerboats, since this is a Scarab, I want to have it look like Betty Cook's Kaama.
Here is one of the boats I built: SS Miss Belmar
It's a scratchbuilt boat from the Gulf Craft builders plans. I even have a mold I made of the hull. She is 54" long, 16" beam, powered by 4 Dumas 12v motors running 4 Dumas props.
Right now I'm hopefully finishing up on a submarine: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...539038&page=22Comment

They look very cool and very nice.
I also just found the video of the sub and the cat.
You need to do a video at a nice clean pond with some room for it to run.
Do the build thread and ask for help with the setup of all the hardware to,
It can make or brake how it handles and runs for you.
I think some of the members will love to see your handy work and will be asking you for help to,
On make there boat look a lot better scale wise.
Also you may find members wanting to buy a hull from the mold you made.Last edited by lenny; 09-22-2013, 09:22 PM.Comment
