Stinger help

Just wondered what's the advantage of lengthening / shortening the stinger on a mono? Also is there a recommended distance from prop to rudder or should there be a decent gap between the both my rudder is currently only about 1/4 from the end of the flex

A lot of people say it helps to have the leading edge of the rudder just in front of the drivedog, out of propwash.
