Trying to remove the paint from a mystic 29 right now tried two of the Safer type paint strippers and so far they are not touching it much. Might just have to go to the really caustic stuff to get the job done. Bear in mind if you remove the paint chances are that the gelcoat had to be roughed up for the paint to stick well

I painted it trough out the years and now I want to go back to white gel coat but there is 3 layers of paint under it and I'm not sure if using chemicals to do it will soften up the gel coat

The stuff I linked to has easily removed Krylon, Testors Enamels, Rustoleum. I have used it on some unknown paints to and its worked awesome every time.

If the paints on there that good does it really need to come off? Couldnt you just scuff it up and spray right over it?

In my case. I wanted a fresh look for this year I sanded it a little did primer and painted after about 20 min the paint started cracking and coming off. Not sure what the issue was but paint won't stick no matter how many times I sand and paint. So I figured to take all paint of and start from the base.

I would have just sanded it off instead of trying to use solvents, i found that they permanently weaken the outer layers of gelcoat and fibre glass

That's what I'm afraid of doing. There is just some areas of the hull where it will be hard to use sandpaper
