LIPO fire at the FE Nationals

    Deleted as requested. JIM

OK I've been beat up enough on this! The FE Nationals was indeed a great, well organized event - lots of fun loving boaters - some of the greatest FE drivers on the planet were there. But to stuff a sock in my mouth for raising a serious safety issue that could have been a genuine disaster - is inappropriate. To require "silence" regarding what happened is BS. For the race director to tell the FE Nationals participants at the drivers meeting the following morning to keep silent about what had occured - including any mention of what happened on this OSE forum - is extreemly anal at best. Downright dangerous if this information could have saved someone facing a similar situation.

The fact is, the smoke and flames from an ice chest 1/2 full of LIPOs (at least 20) was a VERY scary sight and came very close to burning up a big buck trailer full of big buck FE race boats, not to mention the physical risks to those brave racers who entered that trailer to try to put it out with dry chemical extinguishers. Inhaling the smoke from burning LIPOs is extreemly hazardous and may have long term impact on those who tried to extinguish the fire.

I am shining daylight on what occured for one reason only: THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

Should you have the misfortune of having a LIPO meltdown or fire - FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE USELESS. This serious fire was only stopped by dunking the ice chest full of burning LOPOs in WATER.
And try NOT to breathe the smoke. Stay upwind if possible. Eventually, the fried LIPOs will stop burning under the water - yes they will continue to burn underwater - but it still takes awhile & those smoke bubbles are dangerous.

I hope this thread helps anyone who encounters a burning LIPO. To those who would rather I keep my mouth shut - too bad. JIM

Ken's trailer? The big red/black monster? I have seen the inside of that beast, hope the damage wasnt too severe, i would assume smoke damage if you folks got the flaming mess out in time. Kudos to the rescuers and hope the toxic fumes do not have any long lasting effects on the two that went inside and are they ok?

Not about forum owner deleting, more about respect for bloke that just lost a fortune and doesnt want a thread on it..

We all know how dangerous lipo's can be.... Alway's use a lipo safe bag when un attended on charge... (can't remember the last time i did, decent wake up call)..

        Sorry for your loss.

Hobbyking sells the lipo storage bags really cheap.
          OSE needs to sell these.

I don't understand the delete. What's wrong with raising awareness?

Tiny's right. Ken feels horrible about this.

Here's some more information (not much, out of respect for Ken), but the fact of the matter is that Ken did not lose much equipment. The trailer is fully entact, and I think an N-2 mono may be lost, and a few lipos.

It's a good reminder to make sure we respect our power source and follow manufacturers recommendations about use, storage and charging of Lipo's.

I understand that it's a bit embarrassing, but I'm really surprised that this is being kept hush. I've read numerous posts on this matter stating that it was "a good reminder"... but no one wants to share the reminder with the rest of the class??? Stuff happens guys. It would be resposible to let people know what protocol was followed/not followed leading up to this event so others can gain awareness.
I've hooked lipos up backward, accidentally series ESCs together, and even recently accidentally charged a lipo on "nimh" setting. None of us are above mistakes.

We should all know what not to do with lipo. I see the thread as more gossip then raising awareness. If we want to gossip we should be talking about all the great racing action that happened at the Nats. I agree with it being "hushed" up if you will, better to focus on all the positive action then one negative event.

Come on, really? It's kind of a big deal. What's to gossip about? Why not enable others to learn from mistakes?

^^^These are conflicting statements in the context of your post.^^^

It's been a long time since I've seen this sort of thing be an issue. It would definitley be helpful to inform people about what happened.
It's obviously up to the person that had the fire, but if it were me I would definitley share what happened. If it made one person take lipo care more seriously and prevented an incident, it would be worth it.

It could be your vehicle, trailer, shed, house, and possibly even your life, or that of a loved one. Think about it,----- but not too long!

Being a total noob at this, I'm like a sponge and hearing/learning about this stuff is VERY helpful to myself and others in the same situation as I am, new to the sport/hobby.

Has anyone ever overcharged a lipo (on purpose) to get more volts for that extra advantage?
