Out at Camp Dearborn, we watched a fresh 1/8 scale Atlas blast into a seawall wide open at right around 55 miles per hour ish. Even the cells were crushed. It was awful. We've never been back to that pond. OH! At one of the Cup races, Danny Fine glitched into our retrieve boat with an 18cell a rigger. KAAAARUNCH! Clean up isle 5! In his defense, Chris ran 19 classes that weekend and Danny probably 14. That's when you make mistakes.

With more experience the catastrophes start to spread out. They still can happen but less often. You get better at developing a routine. It's when I get distracted from the routine that I forget stuff. Big races are the worst for me. yap yap yap yap......forget to grease a shaft....burnt.

I drove my 40" DF mono directly into my pontoon boat and put a 4" hole in the pontoon. The knockoff DF was perfectly fine though.
Crashed a Beautiful H&M Drifter L into a seawall and smoked the entire left side. Plenty of pool noodles, so she stayed up, and I was able to save all my gear along with the brand new 6s packs.
Stuffed a DF 33" mono. The canopy caved in as it dove, smoked the esc on that one. ( I hate the DF 33 hull).

Oh yeah, I also had a minicat racing micro hydro take off on me and drive clear into the middle of a lake never to be found again. Searched for hours on my ski. That one was a bummer, and my first loss.

~80 mph crash, only recovered the sponsons and receiver....

Fellow club member's Q Sport Hydro spent months at the bottom of the pond before being found.....nothing was usable.

I have damage many but only lost one in 27 Years of running.

I think I have had everything stated above happen to me. This weekend I got too close to the fountain on one end of the pond and hit it. I am still repairing it.

              Hi Guy's ,

If you are ever at the Zinc Lake at Broken Hill in Far Western N.S.W in Australia I urge you to stay away from the cement Kerb that surrounds the lake . It has claimed many fine boats , & has made grown man cry !!! , having stated this , spectacular place to lose your boat as the lake has lovely fountain & surrounded by lush grass in the desert . Not for people with heart conditions , has not claimed one of my vessels yet , though i have kissed the wall with Apparition Sport Runner hard . Would rather the sky fall down on me if I smacked my current tunnel project into the wall there - Gnarly. !!!!

A good friend of mine once said 'you should never race a model that you still like'.

Years ago I destroyed a challenger during a race. The engine cut for some reason and I had another racer just astern of me at the time. He ran clean over the top of my boat - not his fault - it was a racing incident. I was amazed at what a prop can do to fibreglass in under one second! The hull of my challenger was a write-off. At the time I was in no position to afford a new hull and so gave up racing.

These days I build boats for my grandson to use although I do run them as 'sports boats' on a local lake - and great fun it is too. Grandson will most likely be entering his first race in a year or so and I am looking forward to watching him race a model.

Guys lost my first boat recently but it was my own fault.
I've learnt many important lessons but its been great fun.
Next boat i'll try to make it bullet proof so this does not happen again.
Speed is a very addictive hobby and love it.
Beats helicopters in my opinoin I've lost thousands of dollars in parts over a two years.
I would never go back to that sport and these boats rock.
I'm only a noob at this but there is nothing wrong with learning and besides there is no expert out there with all this new technology that keeps changing.
Every one learns from each others mistakes.

                      Amen to that, Jim. Being cogniscent of that fact, the thoughtful hosts of Winter Warmups gratuitously present this charming award/momento to the racer who leaves the most parts on (in) the water. { I was the hands/boat - down recipient of this coveted award in 2010}

LMAO! When I lived out west we had the "Special Helmet" for whoever left the most equipment strewn down a double black diamond! You had to wear it to the locals hangout. Damn I hated that thing, Until somebody duct taped a bong to the top of it!
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I too have lost a few things along the way.Recently a few cables/props.Years ago I had a small Astroflight powered rigger go out of control and dive down stick in the muck at the bottom for a while,(don't know how long, seemed like forever),and shoot straight back up and into the air about 20ft and straight to the bullrushes.Minor damage but nicknamed the "trout" afterwards.I have recently put a camera on my hat so I can film and share incase of mishaps.
Oh,and that same rigger went through many ESC's and motors as I was going after Auguston's FE record at the time. Thanks for letting me share that with you guys,Shawn
