I have been using the Hyperperformance collet for my UL-1 motor to square drive in my OS lower unit, but it seems a bit too soft. The drive cable spins just enough in it to get stuck in it. Does anyone else make a collect for this made from stronger aluminum or possibly steel?

I am currently trying to figure one out as well. I wondered if a straight coupler with set screws on opposite sides would work or a regular style collet reversed so the set screws clamp the square end and the collet end clamps around the motor shaft. Not sure if either option would work without adjusting the space between the motor and lwr unit. -

I was living with mine also, but it broke the shaft right at the coupler during my the last heat race. I think it broke because it wasn't free floating any more.
If it had not been for a fellow racer having a spare flex shaft (Mike Ball), I would have been out of that class for the rest of the day.Comment

You could solder the tip of the square cable or tap a couple set srews in the aluminum coupler. Knock on wood we have put a lot of laps and test sesions with spec and larger up to 4082 motors on the OS lower and have not seen a failure yet. I guess you also could consider anodizing the coupler which would harden the surface. Cables break from use as long as it doesn't become a pattern.

Hey Sean,
I have been using the square drive collet made by Ray Fuller and the same OS brand flex shaft for 2 full season now with no issues. I am no tunnel expert, but I would bet they want that flex shaft floating for a reason. Why? I am not sure.Comment

The couplers from Ray Fuller are the ones made by REK machining. They are what I use in my adaptor kits.
Some guys have bought flex shafts from me that have a square on 1 end to have a snug fit in the Hyperformance collet and smaller on the other end to have a snug fit in the OS prop shaft assemblyComment

Sean, yes I am; the one I got from Mike L. In fact it's holding up just fine with a (play) 9XL in my heavyish 30" Herb Stewart hull.2008 NAMBA P-Mono & P-Offshore Nat'l 2-Lap Record Holder; '15 P-Cat, P-Ltd Cat 2-Lap
