    prop suggestions

    Afternoon Folks,

I'm looking for suggestion on which props to buy for my new toy!

    Toysport Twin Drive Jolly

    2 Fiegao 8 XL's

    2 Hydra 120's

    I think 4S Lipo's(any opinions)

I sure could use the help, My intentions are to buy 1 set of metal props and 2 or 3 sets of carbon fiber ones just as a learning tool. I'm thinking of buy the cf props above & below the size & pitch of the metal props. This way I don't have a lot money tied up in props I won't use!

    Thanks guys!!!!

I can not make a recomendation apart from due to my scale boat building. They should be counter rotating. I suggest you look at the RRR board as their members have a lot of experience with twin drives

For easily accessible counter-rotating props you are limited to Octura x442s and x447s. I would start with the 42s. The 47s are pretty large for an 8XL/4S combo in a single drive - but they might work in a twin drive. The 42s will certainly give decent performance at a lower amp draw.

        Hydra esc

I see you want to run 4s lipos on your Hydra's and before you do take a hard look at the paperwork that came with them you will find yourself on your own when using 4s or 6s which is the advertised input power! Just read your paperwork those things are expensive to go burning up. I would hate to see anyone go through that and castle creations is backed up 5 weeks for repairs I just got mine back (hydra 120)

          there are some other props out there that will work also;
          abcprops.com has the following 3 blade L&R props ;
1516 which is 1.5 inches dia w/1.6 pitch is 39mm
          1616 is 42mm
          1816 is 47mm
          2016 which is 2 inches dia. w/1.6 pitch 51mm
          2018 is 51mm w/1.8 pitch
          2116 is 54mm
          2118 is 54mm
and more. download the pdf file from there website. best to order by calling during bussiness hours (10am m-f) and speak with Jim.

I was also surprised to discover in the 'fine print' that the Hydra 120 is not covered by the manufacturers warranty if using 4 cell lipos.
In the advertising blurb they clearly state that without BEC you can use 6 - 20 NiMH cells or 2 - 6 lipo cells.
I figured I would be well within the operating range with 18 NiMH or 4 or 5 lipos.
Bit of a nasty surprise and makes me wonder if I should have bought a different brand.

I run them on 4s all the time they seem to work great. no heat. I ran the same exact setup in a homebuilt cat. Run the 442 backcut 2mm and the motors cells and speed controllers will be fine

Well that is good to know, I ran a 120 hydra a 6s and it didn't make the cut 1 run and I toasted the board, but the up side is Castle Creations has a great warranty and you might get away with it once at 6s since the advertising says 2-6s lipo on it, but i was planning on running a 4s setup on a hydro I have, Thanks for the reply

                  FWIW I run a Hydra 120 on a 4S2P 10XL boat. I've run up to a X452 prop with no issues. It's in a 32" mono that runs in the low 50's.

just asked Castle Creations about that 4s thing. and here is the reply from them.

                    "Klaus,

This is a mistake. Somehow, that wording was cut and pasted from our Mamba Max manual and doesn’t belong in the Hydra manual. All Hydras are capable of running 6s. With anything over 3s you must disable the onboard BEC by pulling the red wire between the ESC and the receiver and use a separate battery pack or BEC to run the receiver and servo(s).

seems like the hydra dont have any problems with running more then 4s after all.

Well if that isn't a nice bit of information about the red wire which on the original instructions is not there!! so now I know why my first one burned up DUH.
Thanks for the information I really applicate it.

                        Very interesting.
A complete turn around from the reply I got from Joe Ford at Castle last month where he stated that there would be no warranty if using 4 or more lipos.
Good to see them now backing the claimed voltage and cell ratings.
Might just have to go back to my original plan to power my Triton with 18 cells and a 12XL.

You know after reading your post about your talk with Joe Ford I think it may be wise to give him another call and see if that position has actually changed! since you have his contact info why don't you get a hold of him and quote the above statement preceding my last post, it would be interesting to see what he says to you, especially since this is a complete opposite stance to his previous statement to you. I recommend double checking to be sure.

I have sent an email to Joe Ford quoting the reply to Klaus.
