maybe i am thinking to much?

if your leaving a gap at the strut for the cable shrinkage and the drivedog does not come in contact with the strut then the force of the prop pushes on the motor and there use a thrust bearing to absorb the force not to strain the bearing, so then the force to push the boat is not at the strut but some where in the boat where ever the motor maybe- lets just this a mono hull- should you be taking this into account when setting up a boat? is the 2 piece strut system better the force of the prop is at the strut

this just kind of dawned on me earlier and cant get it out of my mind- please help i cant mount my motor until i am satisfied

You understand correctly. That is why you see people using thrust bearings just behind the collet and against the motor mount(with a paper thin gap). I use them in some of my bigger boats (over 30" mono's) as insurance. I must say though, I have run without them in bigger boats 33" mono's all day long and never had an issue.

Correct that, I did have an issue with the collet being driven into the motor mount with a heavier boat and all the thurst being generated. That is defintely where a thrust bearing is good to have.

Right now I am only using them on a JAE21 rigger that I have.

On the two piece shaft the thurst is transferred to the stut (washer betwee drive dog and strut). I had a Pursuit that was set up like that. Really, I did not feel it worked very well and I noticed some type of odd binding happening from time to time. I eventually replaced it with the typical flex shaft set up.

Doesn't mean this is your answer, just my experince over the past 3 or so years I have been doing this.

Notice that none of the Aquacraft, Proboat etc come with thrust bearings? Probably because it is not necessary.

yes i get the thrust bearing action but does the boat react different if the forces is pushing against the rear of the hull or pushing on the motor which is located on the interior further in than the transom,

No, I don't believe it does at all. I noticed no difference whatsoever when I switch over from a two piece drive shaft to a single. I also spent some time wondering what kind of drag you are getting when the drive dog presses up against that teflon washer on the two piece.

The one piece has none of that. All bearings..
