if your leaving a gap at the strut for the cable shrinkage and the drivedog does not come in contact with the strut then the force of the prop pushes on the motor and there use a thrust bearing to absorb the force not to strain the bearing, so then the force to push the boat is not at the strut but some where in the boat where ever the motor maybe- lets just this a mono hull- should you be taking this into account when setting up a boat? is the 2 piece strut system better the force of the prop is at the strut
