    Fireproof Materials?

So, I have a rigger that will only balance correctly if one of the lipos sits 3mm below the end of the motor. The last thing I want is the lipo to be exposed to the temps the motor may reach.

Consequently, I'm looking at sliding some fireproof material between the lipo and the motor. I'm thinking some fiberglass should be sufficient, but haven't run into this issue that I can remember.

Has anyone else run into this close proximity issue before and what fireproof materials have you used to isolate the component that may be sensitive to higher heat?

    Thanks!

Maybe try some of that "turbo heat shield " sold at auto stores . One side is fibreglass matting the other is a shiny foil ( just watch out for shorts ) .
If it is 3mm be careful vibration and flex in the boat don't allow the motor housing to puncture the lipo .

Thanks. There won't be any flex and it actually has 6-7mm of clearance, but I was rounding down. I hadn't thought about the auto stuff. I think I have some wrap sitting around the garage from one of my full size projects.

      Other ideas?

Blowtorches use a fireproof matting to solder/ weld on. Propane torches are sold with a small sheet, i'm sure they sell it somewhere

If you have an old lipo-sack a piece cut from that might work.

Good ideas all. Keep them coming! I have a lipo sack, but it is not something I want to cut up just yet. When I work with a blow torch or welding, I use the tiles that look like pavers.

What about you buy a cheap $15 pull down fire blanket, they are very thin, light weight, yet still works. You could cut that to size and for our applications, you'll have heaps spare. I was thinking of putting some around my esc's just in case of a , I thought it'd help with contain the mess. Just a thought!

Find someone who works on furnaces, my guy had some kind of heatproof-fireproof sheet between 1/16-1/8 inch thick. Can be cut with scissors and wrapped with foil tape available at Home Depot/ Lowes.I use it to protect radio boxes from nitro pipes.

Go to Lowes and in the plumbing section where the flux and solder is they also sell a black fireproof "blanket". It's probably near the bottom shelf, it's only about 10''X10'' or so. It works extremely well and you can cut it to whatever size you want.

That would be a pain in the butt to it in to place just like you want it. And I hope it doesn't get too wet. Also he doesn't have that much clearance, he said only 3mm.

Find a buddy who has performance cars. No doubt he runs headers on one or more of his rides. Header gasket material like the Mr. Gasket material is thin, has a high temp rating and will bend somewhat if you need to mold it. And its less then a 1/8" thick. That will get her done!

Great ideas guys!!! I have plenty to work with. I spent the last few weeks trying to devise a way to avoid this occurrence to no avail. Now it doesn't seem to be an issue at all. I've often considered what a blown cap would do to a lipo should it ever happen. At the very least, I can put a heat shield for other models that may be subject to close proximity.

Thanks to all for the input!
