    Overview of RC Boating Systems

    Hiya,

I would like to learn about the components that go into building an electric RC surface vessel from an engineering point of view. I have a background in RC aircraft, specifically quadrotor micro aerial vehicles, which I use for research projects. Short version: I did stuff with things that fly, not that float.

I would like to go read a comprehensive summary of the options for the various pieces that are used in most RC boats, with an emphasis on boats that are fast / large enough and powerful enough to move over a lake / shoreline scale area.

If anyone could direct me to a good tutorial, generate (part of) one themselves, or throw links at me, I would really appreciate it. Topics I'm looking for (and not looking for):

[x] RC receivers & transmitters (I already use these)
[x] 2/3 Cell LiPo Batteries (I already use these)

[ ] Hull designs and tradeoffs
[ ] ESCs for boat motors
    [ ] Boat motors
    [ ] Rudders / Controls
    [ ] Cooling
    [ ] Propellors
[ ] How to interface the inside of the boat to the outside while keeping a sealed cavity

I've tried doing some searching online for similar overviews, but everything I found was not particularly useful.

You can use the search button (above) to look at all of those topics.

Welcome to the OSE site! You've found a pretty good place to get all the info you need here. Lots of good guys here and plenty of knowledge!

If you like things that fly then you will like a Hydro Plane. I built a Whiplash 20, but if you do not want to build I would go for the Insane FE 30" Hydro. The Insane or the Whip will easily reach speeds over 60mph using the Neu 1515 1y (2200kv). Buy the best lipos you can afford. I like two ThunderPower 65c 4400mah 4s packs wired parallel (4s2p equaling 8800mah)

Properchopper can help with the Insane:

While I am not a big fan of the forum, there is a lot of decent basic information in this trhead:

Speed - Electric - NEW to FE? BUILDING a boat? What's a LiPo? Look Here FIRST!! - Thread Title: NEW to FE? BUILDING a boat? What's a LIPO? Look Here FIRST! This thread had been created to assist new boaters, boaters looking to build a new boat or completely new to the electric scene. It will replace the thread titled
