I used Summitracing's single stage urethane paint with matching primer surfacer. Primer is very thick and needs extra thinning. Very strong bond using these two together
Find Parts and Accessories urethane paint KEYWORD and get Free Shipping on Orders Over $109 at Summit Racing!

Harber freight HVLP spray gun will work. Practice, adjust gun, practice, adjust gun, then spray.

That is a good looking gun but is there anything similar by a worldwide company, the Sharpe only seems to be available in the states and once I factor in shipping, tax and postal costs this end it looks like about $240 to my door, if I can get something similar from a bigger brand locally it would work out less than half price. In that sort of price range I could get a Fiac Merlin or UPOL maximum mini, anyone used either of these?

edit: ouch I just found that HVLP guns run on turbines not compressors, the cheapest used turbine on ebay is $400 as opposed to $160 for a compressor, and I'm guessing you cant run air tools or pump your tires up with a turbine so it lacks the versatility and cost sharing of a compressor. Is HVLP definitely the way to go? It would take me a very long time if ever to break even with rattle cans at that price.
Look for something like this over there. I use this gun with good results.

This is the one I use. I spray primer and color coat. It can be adjusted for small touch up. Watch the video.

NO, you do not need a turbine to run an hvlp gun, you got it wrong your thinking of an hvlp air system, which is totally unnessasary. A regular compressor will run an HVLP gun , your "suppose" to have the bigger air lines and fittings but its not gonna stop the gun from working if you dont either.

Brushless, the size of the compressor you need is all dependant on how big of a job you plan on spraying? If for example your just spraying a 32" boat a little "pancake" style compressor would get the job done for you, basically any compressor would as long as you had like a 20 gallon reservoir that would be enough air to get a coat on then it could recover while your waiting between coats. To do a complete car the bare minimum would be a 60 gallon reservoir and pump capable of bare minimum 10.3 cfm@90psi.

these are a great buy, comes with 3 tips, so its good for primer and base and clear. All metal construction, so as long as you clean it properly it will last forever. (cheaper harbour freight guns have teflon oand plastic internal seals that wear out)

keep an eye out for used or no reserve $0.99 starts too, deals are there

These are really cheap, but i would probably buy the first link i posted with 3 tips:

this gun is worth $500+ heck i'm going to bid on it!

Everyone should have an air compressor around their home. Buy the highest SCFM rated, 110 volt air compressor you can afford. When I sprayed my Whiplash I used a small Craftsman 1.5 horse 2 gallon compressor (it was barely enough and ran constant).

I have a small oil lubed Craftsman that my wife got at a garage sale (needed a gasket) and I added a 5 gallon tank from another garage sale compressor. Total investment is under $25.00. This is more than adequate to supply my detail gun.

What sort of filters and water traps do you need in the air line with these touch-up guns from Harbor Freight?

The plastic disposable air line filters work great. I have seen them at the Harborfreight stores, but not their online store.

I ended up buying spray cans online http://automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint.asp
I got their basecoat clearcoat system. I got a couple of runs in the clear (happened really fast) but I am pleased with the results.
