I have seen but never run a finned motor and have thought the same myself.
I do run some Outrunners in confined spaces with few issues if that is of help.
I am working on a new setup in my new rigger that will answer some of these issues.See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with woodComment

Finned motors have sealed endbells...no air flow to cool insides.

I've run motors in race conditions before without watercooling, but the boat was very light and efficient.
If you really don't want to water a finned motor, you could add a couple of fans to blow over the fins. But this works best in a hull with lots of internal volume (i.e. not a rigger!), so you don't heat up the air in the hull.
Unless there's a really good reason you don't want to watercool a motor, it's best to cool it.Comment
