    Do you need water jackets

    On say a finned 1717 CC motor I mean do you realy need them ???? Chris

    Yes. There isn't any circulating air in a sealed hull

      Yes, you definitely must water cool it! OSE may have a jacket to fit it.

        I have run the 1717 in racing without and had no problems. Give it a quick run and check.

          I would add that it also depends on how hard you push it.

              I have seen but never run a finned motor and have thought the same myself.
              I do run some Outrunners in confined spaces with few issues if that is of help.

              I am working on a new setup in my new rigger that will answer some of these issues.
              See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

                Finned motors have sealed endbells...no air flow to cool insides.

                worth spending a few dollars to save hundreds more .. ...

                  I've run motors in race conditions before without watercooling, but the boat was very light and efficient.

                  If you really don't want to water a finned motor, you could add a couple of fans to blow over the fins. But this works best in a hull with lots of internal volume (i.e. not a rigger!), so you don't heat up the air in the hull.

                  Unless there's a really good reason you don't want to watercool a motor, it's best to cool it.
