I have had that problem on some shafts also...using stay brite flux and silver solder and a torch. Finally had to have a rag handy and when the solder beaded up on the shaft, wipe it quickly with the rag. That seemed to make it fill the windings.

Cool thanks for all the ideas. I did not get this shaft right away, my buddy worked it over for a while before I got it. Who knows what all he did to it. I'm just glad I got it done.

          Hello Guys,

might be not a tip for soldering it. But I may ask, why it is very common here to solder flex shafts? I build quite a lot of boats and I always use loctite glue with great sucess??

Maybe there's a reason for it?

          Best regards,
          Manuel

Not the joint, we are talking about the end of the shaft where the collet attaches, to keep it from fraying.

Ah that makes a difference. There the problem is the "black finish" or "Brünierung" as we call it here. For that I maybe have a good tip, go to the drugstore and get some salt acid. You won't get the 99% one but maybe a 10% one. Put the end of the flex shafts in for some seconds (you'll see how it works) and if the end is completely blank and the black finish removed, instantly wash the end with a lot of water to get rid of the rest acid 100%! Then clean it, a bit degreasing and then try soldering. This part of the flex shaft will really soke up the solder.

Would be nice if somebody may try this and post his experience with the test.

                  Hello,

here its called "Salzsäure", common translations should be:
                  -hydrochloric acid
                  -muriatic acid
                  -salt acid

And don't smell at it, use it with much caution and respect!!!

                  Best regards,
                  Manuel

aha. Muriatic Acid. The stuff you add to your swimming pool to adjust the Ph.

Yep, DON'T SMELL IT! It'll burn your nose out! ;-)
