    Jim,

I got my Finlay Oberto together tonight and ready to run... Since I can't get the AMMO motor yet, I just put in a brushed motor for now... So here is the gear:

    2S1P PolyRC 20C 3300mah Lipo
    RC-Hydros SC-3 4-12 cell 90amp ESC
Orion Revolution 12x2 V2 Brushed motor (red-endbell)... still have to reverse the timing...
    1/16" Wire drive

Boat weighs 2lbs 11.5oz in RTR trim... It's a little heavy because I laminated 1/64" ply over the 3/32 balsa for the entire hull... It was made to survive real head-to-head racing... I don't think the weight will hurt... I may swap the motor out for a modified 15x2 instead of the 12x2 but we'll see how she works... I also have a modifed Orion 19x2 V2 motor that would work well... Ultimately, I'd like to get the little AMMO brushless though...

I also made an approximately scale sized turn fin... Looks good... we'll have to see how it works... Just need to find a decent day and a small pond...

Let me know if you figure out what you guys are going to do... I'll order a proper spec'd motor once I know...

          Weight

145g, however, I was not thinking of weight saving, I was thinking of hundreds of cycles and no puffing ect. LiPoly may be a better option, just thinking out loud.

Weight of 3300 2S is 179g here on the scale, Poly RC 25C version.

          thanks,
          Steve

Astro also offers the Astro 75 Amp Marine Racing Speed Control p/n 212D for $89.95, another option for ESC for brushed. 05 car motors are anywhere from $25 to $80

Yah, I have one of those, but I also have several older SC-3 4-7 and 4-12 cell RC-Hydros... VERY low IR and bulletproof... Accept nothing but the best!

The problem with Brushed is that the motors condition makes such a difference, and they require a LOT of maintenance to keep working at full tilt... Also have the issue of people tuning them with timing, etc... Makes it hard to maintain a "spec" balance in the class...

The little Ammo Brushless motor would really help keep things on an even playing field from a power perspective...

I'm not against the A123s either, but I'm not willing to purchase anymore equipment for charging than I already have... The little 2S Lipo pack fits perfectly and will work great... At these power levels, puffing shouldn't be an issue...

I'm anxious to get this on the water again and give it a whirl... this time turning left... Should be interesting... I just have to pull the motor and reset the timing to the negative side so I can run the reverse rotation...

OH, that reminds me... anyone doing this.... Make SURE you reverse the direction of your Schotky diode before you apply the power in reverse!! POP!!! Been there and DID that just last night!!!

Steve I have a LI-ION setting on the ICE. Is that for the A123s?

yeah thats what I'm thinkin darin. Most high end chargers have the LI-ION option. I'd almost bet the farm it will charge them. I think they would be a grat option for a couple up my sport boats.

Only problem with A123 is that the voltage is less... a 2S pack of A123 cells is only 6.6V Nominal, vs. 7.4V for 2S Lipo...

If you have an Astro charger, you can buy a $10 chip and do A123. Or just use a switching power supply. 3.6V max per cell during charging.

I am just posting ideas here.....not saying that my suggestions are the only way to go. Also pointing out options, I would most likly use a Hughey mech speedo in this class if I ran. Zero failures!

I may be wrong, but I don't know that the SV esc will run on 2S.

Steven V, any info on that?
