    gyro

anyone ever tried runnign a gyro i have a wrecked heli with a heading lock gyro in it and was thinking that on my bj26 since it seems to bobble around a bit at high speeds that a gyro set very low would correct for that and make it more stable at speed ? any one try this before
i build race cars, and play w fast boats, i think the boats are less of a headache

        Oh no, not again!!!!

Seriously, there have been a number of threads on this topic over the years. Most experienced posters believe it will not work well on model boats for several technical and mechanical reasons. So far there has been a lot of big talk, but zero action. That said if someone could make it work that would be awesome.

Here is the most recent thread:

Ah come on. Why take the fun out of boating? Seriously,....if a hull you have is misbehaving tune it. If your out in conditions that influence stability then its about learning to drive. Jay is right on the money. A gyro controlled system might be a possibility someday but right now its a dream. Not to detract from your intent, but there are some serious hurdles to over come.

So if you are the latest to try it I would be riveted to your build thread.

This issue has been cropping up daily in the heli world , especially now that folks like Walkera have been popping out more and more 3-axis gyro and flybarless systems; not to mention the other (add-on to any heli ) more sophisticated stabilization systems. My personal experience with a 3-axis gyro heli had me turning off the aileron and elevator gyros so I can actually learn how to improve my flying skills rather than having the electronics do the flying corrections.
My personal experience with (fixed) aero tabs on boats leads me to conclude that any "flaps", fixed or likely moveable, have zero effect at all. Just my opinion, I've been wrong before, and have two ex-wives to prove it . In fact I'm not criticizing anyone for going down this road once again - remember : " Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes "

What about something along the lines of an RC cars D-box used in drifting? if you want to run a fin on the front of a hydro to control lift you could set it up so that it applies downforce as it feels the nose lift (much like a driver in a full size hydro) and since we are not in our boats to feel the affect this can act as s "driver". just thought it would be cool to see if its at all possible.

Here's an experiment I did with some large "canards" [ actually UL-1 tailfins] to see if they would keep the nose down on my VS-1. The results speak for themselves - although they may have taken effect at much higher speeds outside the realm of the VS-1. I later found that CG and strut adjustments fixed the problem - like Jay and John explained; learning how to trim a boat is the answer until something better comes along.

I have used heading hold gyros on boats for over a year.

On my BJ26, it is used on the rudder.
On my mono and H&M hydros, it is used on the outboard steering servo.
On my 2009/2010 "Worlds Fastest Model RC Lobster Boat" it is used on the rudder.
It helps stabilize things, helps side to side movement and helps to prevent spin outs.
I do not use super-fast (ie: expensive) servos on these.
I like the Assan heading hold gyros.
I had poor results from non-heading-hold gyros.

im just usign a stock traxxas waterproof servo on my bj26 on the steering rudder and am going to set the gain on low just to help stabilize it from the little hip wiggle it takes on at high speeds
i build race cars, and play w fast boats, i think the boats are less of a headache
