I believe that you're going about this in the right way. The UL-1/spec setup is quite fast, sooo stable and easy to drive, and provides a great platform for upgrades as you get comfortable with the spec speeds. Funny thing is, I have a 1515 1Y & 180 SC just waiting to drop in the FE 30 now that my responsibility of demo-ing the boat as a spec setup has worked out well - BUT I'm enjoying the spec speeds/controllability so much that I may just put off the switch & just have FUN !!!
One thing I can tell you, from [only] my personal experience ( and I'm fairly age-addled & coordination challanged) is that piloting a boat in the high forties and low fifties is pretty groovy and I can look good doing it, but my 60+ mph boats put a substantial strain on my "posterior muscles" {and my Bondo stash}Last edited by properchopper; 08-17-2010, 02:07 PM.2008 NAMBA P-Mono & P-Offshore Nat'l 2-Lap Record Holder; '15 P-Cat, P-Ltd Cat 2-Lap

That's my video, I was never above 80% throttle here and I was letting off in the turns. I don't think most people will be able to handle the boat at the speeds it's capable of with this setup. Maybe for straights but for oval it's pretty insane.
It will usually corner flat with no lift of the throttle. It'll run like this for maybe 2 minutes max. I moved to a UL-1 motor and was mid 50's all day long (for 1 minute at a time) 57mph on many occasions. It runs too hot with the UL-1 motor for anything over 1.5 minutes. (edit)It could be propped down some and run cooler but it just didn't handle as well with the props I had available.
I'm moving to an 1800kv motor now and expect it to run right about 50. If I was going to recommend something and you want something fast I'd get the Leopard 2000kv motor off OSE here and maybe an M445 prop. It should run fairly cool like that.
This boat handles so well it's almost a shame to see everyone wanting to put such monstrous power in them and make them undrivable. I want mine setup as a spec boat though that's just my preference so I understand people wanting to go 80mph just for fun. I just think most will end up trashing the boat at those speeds.
and maybe for kicks one could slap in a 5s for a couple passes.NAMBA20...Caterpillar UL-1, P-Spec OM29, P-Mono DF33, P-Spec JAE, Aussie 33" Hydro-LSH, Sprintcat CC2028 on 8s, PT SS45 Q Hydro, PS295 UL-1 power, OSE Brothers Outlaw QMono 4-sale, Rio 51z CC2028 on 8sComment

I think it would work fine. Maybe not a speed demon but I'd bet it could be made reasonably quick with the right prop and setup. You could probably get a 2s and 3s pack in the boat just fine but it fits a single 4s 5000 pack just perfect like it was made for it (which I think it actually was?)
If I had an extra SV27 motor I'd put it in mine just to find out. I really only want to experiment with the spec motors and practice my setup and driving skills and push those to the limit. I already know it'll go fast if I wanna toss something else in.Comment

Great advise guys!
I want to make the right steps to set this up.
I will mention that i used to race 1\8 scale on road cars and did like the bum puckering thrill
it gave.....lol
Going down the back straight at 70mph+ was a lot of fun when i was younger.
So the FE30 will be an ongoing project to reach the perfect balance.
Any thoughts on the esc i should use?

I'm using a castle Ice 100 for the data logging but I got it wet so I'm in the market for another. It would be nice to see the Hydra ICE come out like right now but I'm sure it won't till I buy something else.
I might go for a Seaking 180 and just buy an eagle tree for the data logging. They work reasonably well and it's got some headroom amp wise which is nice. Just can't decide. The Hydra ICE would be perfect for me if it would just come out.
What motor have you decided on? That will help figure out what esc you want or need.Last edited by v-spec; 08-17-2010, 05:26 PM.Comment

Turnigy 180 amp marine dependant on motor and prop choice.

Sounds like great fun to push this hull to the limits on spec power.NAMBA20...Caterpillar UL-1, P-Spec OM29, P-Mono DF33, P-Spec JAE, Aussie 33" Hydro-LSH, Sprintcat CC2028 on 8s, PT SS45 Q Hydro, PS295 UL-1 power, OSE Brothers Outlaw QMono 4-sale, Rio 51z CC2028 on 8sComment

Ian, you are going about this the right way....read up some threads on ESC's...batteries...motors....and please note boats are a different animal....planes and trucks are easy on the power equation in comparison. The most difficult answer is what prop.
