I had a nearly tragic accident myself when I was a teenager. I ran my boat in the river. The nitro engine quit so I jumped in to get it. I hadn't noticed how fast the river was running. I nearly drowned going after that stupid little boat. I was lucky enough to snag a branch and the boat and pull myself out.

NEVER again have I been that foolish!

Another reason to stay out of the water in florida is gators. If the pond is bigger than a bus, there's a gator in it!

Agreed! I am also certified as A-Instructor (DIWA-ICD) and I would never go for a boat... unless it's a swimming pool or I have some PFD. Did it once in 1.5m deep water for a boat that was 5m from shore and no fishing pole available... never again.
It seems that the better swimmer you are, the less chances to actually go for it, you will just know better...

          all together:

          STICKY...STICKY...STICKY....STICKY...

However, as I was chanting, the thought came to me, stickies can go unnoticed. At least these threads do bring it back to our attention - and for those who may have not appreciated the seriousness. I have been yelled at on this board, and I think its the best thing for any/all of us.

          RESCUE CRAFT...RESCUE CRAFT...RESCUE CRAFT...

it gets more action than any of my boats. Hey, how about a solar powered one?? I have nuked several batteries lately in my rescue craft and just thought how nice it would be to make it solar ------ anyone? anyone?

Tried already... not enough power from a decent panel (not a commercial one, that is even worse). You are limited to very small brushed motors. It will do the job, if you can wait... Once I get the new panels (in a month or so, I'll try). The other option was to buy a small toy with an H2 generator/motor, a lot smaller for the same power.

For about $60 at wal mart you can get an inflatable boat that seats four. It packs into a box about 2' by 2' by 12". No need to swim.

Last time it was 12-13 feet under water and I knew the place....
                Found it after 3 attempts.
I also had to ask pro divers - the water was dirty and no chance to see anything....
I spend every vacation snorkeling so even 15feet is no problem (Egypt coral reef is awesome)
By the way - has anyone of you heard ESC beeping under water? You can hear it even if you are 3-4 feet away...

And advice for those who want to rescue the boat....
Don't go into the water rapidly - you may lose consciousness when there's big difference between air and water temperatures.

My heart goes out to that family for their loss.

People should use common sense. There is certain places that I would not get into the water. The places that we run are swimming/diving spots. People drown in pools and bath tubs also.

Ok so exactly what is the difference between swimming/playing in the water and swimming after something in the water?

I swim everyday for fun when I am at my lake cottage, whats the difference lol. Call me naive or dumb if you wish.

you can call me dumb too - I also know the place where I go with my boat.
I train freediving/snorkeling so it's no problem for me to jump into the water - swimm 100m and then dive even 15 feet/4,5m(lake) or 12feet/3,5m (salt sea/ocean).
Heheheh i also do it for fun (freediving) don't need a sunk boat
When I was younger I used ice hockey disc instead :)
Come on guys.... most of us can swimm or even dive...
                      Don't make us look stupid.

I know my abilities and that's why I called professional divers when the water in another pond was dirty and I could not see anything.

                      Peace

                          I'll give you 1 difference.

I swam out once. Back in 2002 when I got started in FE. It was summer in Az, so the water temp was over 80 degrees. The pond was very, very small and only 6' deep..but deep enough that I couldn't touch and have my nose above water. The boat was 20' from shore, and I had my twin boys, age 2, in their double stroller watching me run the boat.

The boat just died. I stripped down, swam out and realized that the boat wasn't dead, it was entangled in fishing line that was tangled to a submerged irrigation float.

Have you ever tried to tread water with just your feet while trying to break through fishing line with your hands? I said, "oh sheet", looked over at my boys in the stroller and just then broke the fishing lines. I'm lucky I didn't get my feet tangled!

It was a dumb move, and I'm a good swimmer and SCUBA certified.

I won't ever do that again.

you talk about clear water does this water look clear to you?

there's more to diving than just breathing underwater and most lakes have very limited visibility less than one foot.
My last recovery the guys wife said he walked out into the river and fished there all the time. He had been just missing 16 ft sinkholes for years and never knew they were there. He slipped one day and that was that. I think your comparing apples and oranges you say you can see and you have swam there before so maybe your case is the exception thats for you to decide. I am saying that in a unfamiliar body of water I am wearing a pfd at least preferably going with the canoe and someone who knows the lake to get the boat. Just because you do something others disagree with dont take thier opinion as a personal affront we just want to see you at the lake next weekend.

This is indeed sad news...my heart goes out to the family.

Guys...it's a lot harder to swim with your hands/arms trying to hold onto a boat then it is when you can use your arms freely to tread water. I'm scuba certified too but that is just plain ole common sense. Put floatation in the boat and/or use your head if you just have to swim after it. Use a PFD if you have to swim and have a buddy on stand by. Me...I use a tug...I hate snakes, alligators, snapping turtles and green yucky duck dirtied water.

Dont hold it like a football when you are tyring to swim back. Just flip it right side up and push it towards shore as you swim up to it each time give it another push.

I guess I just dont see the big deal. Sure if you are in a pond or lake you are not familiar with then by all means walk away from your boat or find another way to get to it. But then again its probably smartest to run your boats in a place you do know.
