Since there are a lot of people in this forum and a good chunk is learning how to build stuff, I'd suggest something simple to build, like a rigger... give out max length and cells the hull will be used with... that's all... be creative, build an out of the box rigger... let's not even make it NAMBA/IMPBA compatible.... just build... build experience.
    :::::::::::::::. It's NEVER fast enough! .:::::::::::::::

This is for skill I suggest a scale scratcbuild all the way down to no decals , Guise has to be hand painted hardware handmade etc . A boat build not a hardware install. No assitance but your hands no preformed cowls no nothing all the way down to the nitty gritty as if ose didnt exist no machined water coolers no machined parts .Nada . I suggested the build to challenge the actual ability to build what you need and the boat itself not just who can install hardware. If you wanna get real crazy how about the boat cant be anythin already proven u have to conceptualize from scratch a one off hull it must run on plane @ at least 30 mph and stay in one piece for at least 1 min.The design also has to be accompanied by the theory behind its design that is clear to the Judges. This aint about who can buy this or that just pure hand fabrication and boat building skills as well exhibiting a CLEAR knowledge of how boats works and the fundamentals behind them.Thats a contest.

        I like this last post.
Can I post date my Canard build ??
Can I use my current mini rigger build ??

Seriously guys if I have to build just one more hull just so I can be in some dodgy, half pie, make up the rules as we go build contest ....

        ....then I AM IN !!
        See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

.... I am not a rigger guy, so wouldn't be building one.

I hear two end member suggestions: out of the box vs. design/create everything.

I vote for somewhere in between, so we can have a widest range of participants and not create any subgroups. If in the rules there were points given to ingenuity, then we could account for someone making up their own hardware. I don't think that a persons inability to make their own hardware should keep them out of this build. Further extra points could be given to modifications to existing plans and the theory behind them, whether it be "it looks more scale," or " the last one I built had a problem in this area so I changed it," or whatever.

Also, I agree with not necessarily making it a Namba legal. I think for the first build contest here, it would be nice to engage as many members as possible yet have some friendly competition to encourage us. And I agree that it needs to run, not a prescribed speed, cause then you get into "how did you measure that speed" issues; but up on a plane for sure.

If we keep it open to hull type, we could see later if there were enough participants to have hull type sub groups. I am definitely going to build a 1/10th scale hydro starting in the next few days, so of course I would like to see that be an option for the build. I am not interested at this point, nor have the time to dedicate to inventing my own hardware, so I don't agree with that level of "requirement" in the contest.

Again, I vote for a more open platform and propose this set of basic rules (a starting point that we can modify until we are all [mostly] happy):

            1) the build has to be scratch built and finished during the contest, projects in their infant stages at time of start date should be allowed.
            2) recognition should be given to designers even if it is the participant
            3) the contest has a start and an end date
            4) photo documentation must occur along the way
            5) extra points are awarded for innovation and performance
            6) the build has to be painted (clear varnish permitted) with a theme, either real or fictitious
            7) final video must be posted with narrative by builder by prescribed end date.

How about rules like it must have something innovative or you lose points.

                  Torn...

Well, last night I put a couple more layers of glass on the mold and added the eggcrate reinforcement. Finish it up tonight and start on the other half.

If it is riggers, gonna have to add a couple of mini-V sponson to it!!!!

I will be running the lathe and mill on this one, already used the brake and shear. Going to need some more RTV for the casting urethane. Drive system will be old technology, but all new parts and should be good looking. Will be a fast electric scale offshore mono. Always wanted one, Lipo and brushless now make it possible.

And sticking with the OSE theme, it will be done on the cheap! Well, not time wise, just $$$$.

I am torn because I like the idea of making something new and unique. If I just didn't have this well paying job to get in my way.......

After the mono, might do something else also just to play around with. Something unique.

Let me know what you decide to do, worst case scenario I am in a build contest with one contestant!

I just see that if the rules become too exclusive (i.e., designing/inventing parts as a requirement) we won't ever get off the ground and the idea will fade. But, if we try to get many involved I see a fun and educational journey. I think that the ingenuity and creativity should definitely be encouraged, but not at the expense of excluding those with less ability/tools etc.

I also vote to move this thread to building forum...

LOL But 4 real rr hydro contest was a good idea. Why not do something like a manufactured vs. scratchbuid

I'm down for mostly any kind of FE build. Someone that has the time needs to make up the rules and regs so we can get started.

I like!! I won't be racing this summer () and will be devoting that time to this build. If we decide to put it off, well then I will just have to build another one. I was working on modifying the sponsons on my 1/12th scale hydro... that would be a perfect fit for this event. I may even have time to make my own hardware.

I do like the two categories though, that way all are welcome
