Note that nowhere in my posts did I say that GPS speeds are not accurate. I have run dozens of SAW passes through timing lights with a GPS on board, and most of the time the GPS speed was within 1-2 mph. It always read high, which makes sense since it measures the highest speed over a short interval, while the boat may have been accelerating through the traps giving a lower average mph. The difference is that most of those who have a 80 or 100 mph GPS speed would never be able to set a SAW record with that setup.

GPS racing is certainly fun, but SAW through timing traps is all that is officially recognized. Video and GPS photos can be easily faked, official timing can't be.

This is an interesting thread, though it is curious that the initiator has not responded. There are some really good responses to what our expectations are in relationship to cost, skill levels and what speed we are comfortable at running varoius hull designs.
I am a sport boater and enjoy "building" my boats as much as running them and I err on the side of caution. I take my hat off to the true racers, as I and all of us benefit from their endeavours in pushing the envelope.

So Jay just so i understand, will a SAW run through the traps be faster if your at top speed soon into the run or just reaching top speed at the end of the run? Your not actually measuring speed you are measuring "time" to convert to speed. But also your boat could have hit 80 and then slowed to 75 at the end..........what will your speed be? I am not sure if im explaining myself correctly.

All official speed records for cars, boats etc. are done in this manner with the run done in both directions on a measured distance and the combined times result in the official speed.

Gary, you will always go slower than your actuall top speed if your acelerating through the traps. You have to be going full speed before you enter the traps. Then you have to drive a strait line at top speed throught the traps. If your drive crooked through the traps then it will take longer to reach the other side so there for a slower time. This is what makes saws hard and fun at the same time.

OOOps i wasent lokking at it as a "moving start' so to speak". I only see videos of boats sitting down the end of the lake and then starting. Also i have never paid attention to any markers out on the water. Got it!

Sorry Lads I have been busy with work and family, not hiding in a corner in the fetal sucking my thumb as one put it lol( have 6 kids that occupy most of my time). First off thanks to all of you with positive feedback. I may have set my goal to high. I may be new to boating but not new to RC so I know all about burnt motors, broken parts, crashed planes, cars, trucks etc etc etc. I have a boat that does 55mph ( EKOS ) and it took me a couple months of reading, asking questions and getting the right gear. I'm in no hurry and money wasn't an issue if it was my thread would have been " 100+mph boat hulls on a budget". I'll change my goal to an attainable 70-80 mph and look for a boat hull in that category. Once again thank you all for your time.

70 - 80 MPH is a lot more realistic , still a goal with some challenges but is attainable . going from 66mph to 100mph will take over double the power to reach
