After all that I am pretty sure he is in the corner in the fetal position sucking his thumb.

If you set your sites on 80 mph you can do that with some cats and hydros at a reasonable cost..especially with the new motors and HV ESCs available.

I'm very new to this whole FE boat thing, but I have to say I'm quickly realizing that there is big difference between top speed and usable speed. I guess if its glass calm and you are doing SAW then you can shoot for the moon. But I'm looking at building boats that I can run ~50mph top speed in a little bit of chop and I seem to be finding happiness and fun in that process.

If you like the idea of a self-righting mono, check out a toysport syncron (with flood chamber) with a neu 1515 1.5y motor on 6S.
          (see my avatar )

I have one of these and am at 45mph on 4s, running a large x648 prop with zero motor/esc heat... got lots of headroom for 6S... those with more experience tell me this boat can get into the 60's...

          Downside, it aint cheap!

Good response, what is your budget and hull choise, as that is important.

              Tony,

You got any pics or video of the AM Thunderbolt burning up? I remember meeting that father and son after a district race and thinking to myself how my dough they had wrapped up in that sport boat. Ouch, that was an expensive crash.

100mph is no joke. Some throw numbers around like 100mph boats are just an everyday thing. I can tell you it requires an incredible amount of trial and error.
It took me years of building and experimenting to get there and several sunk boats.

With all this one might wonder why anyone even keeps trying. Well... The adrenaline rush of a successful run just can't be described. It takes months of work and preparation to just prepare for one SAW event for literally seconds of running time. It isn't easy but is it worth it? for me OH YA!

The comments above have been spot on. Learn by reading and going out and actually running boats. Carefully observe how they run when you make changes, keep track of what worked and what didn't. Everyone has to start somewhere and you have to walk before you can run.

Tyler, I watched the first run, but had to go. The crew that saw it happen said that the boat stuffed on the front straight, half-sunk & started smoking. Gilbert rowed out, started putting it in the rescue boat when it burst into 3-4 ft. flames. He dropped it back in the water, helplessly watched it burn, and finally it was brought in with the ball. One sponson completely melted off and all that was salveagable was the rudder & strut. He's planning another boat, BTW.

Well you have to pay to play sometimes. Too bad.

Stuffing normal wouldn't casue a boat to catch fire, so i wonder it the batts came loose and connectors shorted or something else.

That's exactly what I figured. I told him next build to really fasten things down. Likely something got loose like a battery & shorted - 12S @ nearly 50V & mega-amps- Ouch for sure !

As an aside, I had a conversation with a tech at Neu a while ago when I sent in a motor that crispied [along with a CC 240] from my H&M. He told me in no uncertain terms to make sure the motor leads can't move around. Interestingly the latest Neu's have strain reliefs on the endbell where the wires exit. Hmmm...

wow I am so nervous about my current build (my first) and its just a mono shooting for 40-46 mph. I know I am a noob to FE but I think you need to start slower and listen to these guys. 100mph goal is fine but its like just up and deciding to run a marathon one day its not going to work you have to train for it first.
