    Cooling... Plan B

I'm planning on running two CC/Neu 2200Kv motors powered by two Turnigy 180a ESC's on 4s in a 41" hull. Slightly under powered, so some concern about heat.

As a "Plan B", I've set aside a passive hard drive cooler heatsink. By cutting holes for the caps and the wires, I'll be able to mount the ESC's with the FET's directly mounted to the heatsink. Larger heatsink dissipates more heat. I have some aluminum tubing and thermal epoxy to run through the heatsink (probably 4 tubes across the top)

Plenty of room in the hull as it is a gasser conversion.

Added weight is approx 450 grams. Again, this is a "Plan B", so hopefully won't need it.

Anyone attempted using a larger heatsink before?

I dont think twin 2200's is underpowered for that hull. Is that a shell from a car amp??

Nope. It's from an HDD case.

I've built a few TNN cases, so am familiar with heat dissipation and think that this heat sink will certainly dissipate more heat than the stock heat sinks.

Nice setup amd if you have the room and can take the payload then go for it.
I have gone another way recently, I change tack every season and now I am going back to sensible power setups that do not rely on massive water cooling.

My two small cats I ran yesterday went to lvc with no water sent to any parts.
The outrunner motors were very warm but easily passed the 5-10 second test. The esc was warm in both boats and before you wonder, the performance was nuts.

My big cat is in the process of a twin power setup. This will be two decent size OR motors with esc,s well capable of the job and suitable packs.
I will run it initially with no water in as the esc's have thermal safety anyway (not that I like to use that feature)

By all means water cool if you want to. I am moving away from it again.
I may be back in 6 months with a twin inlet super-dooper water cooler.
          See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

            Sounds cool Simon!

I'm really hoping that I won't need it at all, again it is a "Plan B" should the performance be that far under par. I kinda doubt it will though.

Thanks Simon and I dont mean that sarcastically. When I hear someone who decides to size the components to the workload without smoke and mirrors you know some folks have been reading between the lines. I recently had been in conversation with some of the "old crowd" about why people feel the need to push everything to the wall? Why? Like its about bragging rights or something? Feel like you can make anything better then the original? I guess its human nature. Congratulations on such an astute lesson or realization.

Sorry Benjamin, dont want to confuse your topic thread. Not being comparative or implying anything. Projects are what keep us on our game. Just couldnt resist praising someone for speaking out about doing something you dont see to often.

No worries, I kept it in context.

And really the purpose of this thread is to discuss "Plan B" cooling if necessary, which could be, simply lowering the prop or using larger, better suited electronics.
