...a 1521 would probably shred those plastic gears on the FDM transmision...
A common misconception. For example, one club member has a 17# T Mono with a Lehner 2080 motor on a stock Fine transmission spinning an x455 without problems. The only time I have seen shredded gears by someone who knew how to set up a geared boat was in an S-Hydro SAW application.

Can you shred the Fine gears? Of course you can - just like you can knot up a 3/16" flex cable or burn up an ESC if you do not know what you are doing. But properly setup the Fine box is appropriate for a lot of today's power. The secret is to use minimum gear lash and an appropriate lube.

I wasnt really comparing it to a BL. I just know alot of the guys running those type of boats use big brushed..............i didnt think high speed was the goal here, that hull cant stand too much speed i wouldnt think.

So what is the motor recomendation to push 25 MPH + ? I would like to stay brushless and I never gave much thought to reverse. Does the CH120 esc have reverse as I didnt see it in the write up.
I dominated the 30" and under class for 2 years now I am moving into the 30"-40" class so I need the "powa". I have over a dozen props for the lobster boats all different pitches, diameters and modifications + the inline amp/watt meter for testing. The batterys for this hull will be a pair of 10 cell (all matched) 3,700 in series.

So total voltage will be ~24 volts nominal? That limits choices - no BJ motor for you. Depending on the gear ratio and prop pitch, something like a Feigao 12XL to 14XL could work well.

I have enough gears for a few ratios between 2:1 to 4:1. All that said, would the 1521 be to large? Should I drop down a size?

Man goto bostar power tools on ebay and get you a panasonic industrial tool brushed 18 volt dc motor they turn 20,000 @ 18 volts .The motor has a 6mm output shaft. The motor can be overvolted to 24 volts;it has an internal cooling fan. I have one havent put it in anything yet but the motor weighs over a pound . The motor had nmb bearing (these are good bearings trust me!) I know from skateboarding where we cared so much how long our wheels would freewheel spin. The only better are the germans .Dont ask me why we but the bearing just had the stamp germany on the side, and they were the best. The motor can is at least 50mm and the length is at least 74mm. It would be perfect scale power and cheap. You could build you a simple 50 amp h-bridge speed control and be done with it. There are hundreds of diy brushed speed control designs on the internet. It might be more power than you need for scale speed.

You dont need a brushless motor for that scale boat. The real thing probably run 35 mph if that. What you gonna do with a 60 mph scale model? Turn it into a PT-109? Dont waste your money on all that brushless stuff. The lipo cells may be cool but if the hull can hold it use nimh packs in parallel and get you a big prop and go from there.Lipos are too touchy and require a more sophiticated speed control with lv cutoff. With that submerged set up you get alot of thrust. You need somthing that will deliver alot of torque at a low kv.Any motor designed for a power tool is gonna be perfect for that why waste your money unless you want a super fast boat plus those mentioned hydro a cat setups are semisurface setups if you try them submerged youre probably going to burn something up.If u dont like my suggestion id follow the advice on the 700bb8.4v.

I searched all over ebay for Bostar Power Tools with no luck! Can you post an actual listing number for something the have?
