Feigao 580l question

Hi All,

Quick question, what wind 580l would you recommend putting into a cat(42").

Running a twin setup and wanted some advise before purchasing, was thinking 9l?

What battery options do you have, what props, what is target weight? How fast you wanna go?

Jesse J, thinking 6s to start, have 51mm props which i'll probably replace, and want to go quickly:)

I like the 580 9L with 6s. It will haul the mail.

This summer i am going to rebuilt the Andreas Schink Jolly 110cm (43") with twin setup feigao 580L8 , 6s lipo and 150 ETTI esc props starting with 42mm 3 blades .

This isnt going to be just a fun setup .....:rockon:.....

focused - 8l , hmmm got me thinking now, still unsure which one to go and there ain't much in it. Was also thinking about trying the turnigy monster esc's, but will need to water cool (something else for me to learn but have a few ideas:))

yea they got these boats running 100+ mph now. if you go with the 580L I would not use the aluminum cooling jacket for it. It's massive and too much weight. Together with the motor is 689g X 2... go with some lighter means of water cooling for this sucker.

A few ounces means nothing to a boat with nearly 6 horsepower. My big cat only has 10S (not 12S like the OP's) and weighs almost 20 lbs - it kicks butt on gas cats. De-magnetizing an overheated motor is a far greater pain than loosing 0.002 mph due to an extra few ounces. And how on earth would anyone make an efficient reliable water cooler that weighs less??

I buy acrylic and carbon fiber tubing and make my own very easily, and they work very well for a fraction of the cost and the weight. Aluminum ones for 2 of these motors are almost 1/2 pound due to their large size, I know I have one. If you want to tote an extra 1/2 lb on your boat well thats up to you.

That motor jacket weighs less than a 5 cell rx pack. Insignificant in the overall setup of the boat.

For those who don't have experience running large FE boats - I'll let you in on a secret. Weight is your friend. Most all large hulls have too much lift at the speeds we run them, so they blow off easily in anything but relatively calm water. To keep them on the water, we add weight. This counters lift, and helps the hulls from bouncing around so much.

The weight advantage is very evident when racing against the gas guys. Their boats weight about 4 to 5 pounds less than mine does, but I can handle race water much better. FE has the instant power to make up for the slight loss of acceleration from the added weight. I can still blow off, but I almost always finish the heat right side up under power. The average gas cat - not so much.

Now, you could add lead as weight, but it is a far better idea to add that weight as something functional. Hull thickness, stronger/better/heavier parts are preferable to lead.

If saving a few ounces on your boat makes you happy, by all means go for it. Just don't insist that it really matters - some of us actually know better.
