Im still watching lipo threads like a hawk, trying to learn everything. my basic question is this.. how many packs would I need to replace 4200s under the following scenario.

1 mile (10 laps 700 motor load) after about 30 to 45 min. the boat needs to run again and do this 3 times for that race.

12 cells?? 2-2s or 1-4s 4900 or 5000 will take you there with a decent charger.:)

Yes 12 cells, all I have right now is a graupner ultra duo plus 30, rated for 1-10 li based cells, but it has a max of 7 amps output.

I don't know anything about that charger. But if it will do the job, get yourself a couple of Astro Blinkies and you should be good to go.
