MHZ Lizard motor, esc and battery combo

    Hello everybody

I recently purchased a MHZ Lizard and just started thinking about what kind of hardware i should purchase. I've always driven nitro, and i know absolutely nothing about boating - what so ever.

My dad has a Feigao 540 8XL lying around somewhere, how would that be for this 30" mono?

ANY recommendations are welcome, anything will help as im totally lost in this brushless/lipo thing.

I did do some research but as i said before, i have no idea if it's the right components i've chosen - but here goes:

    Engine: 540 8XL 2,073 kv
Battery: ZIPPY 5000mAh 3S1P 30C (maybe two of these bad boys?)
    ESC: Turnigy's 180A Boat ESC

How would that be for a start?

    Best regards

I have one here is my link, read all the comments an X445 is a good choice for the prop.
    Enjoy the build.

      Hey Douggie,

yeah I read your post some time ago :)

      How does that setup perform?

And if I go with the 8XL and say 3s2p 5000mAh on a 120A, would it fry? I see you're using the CC120A.

      regards

My high speed line is down and I am on dial up, those pics will take forever to load.
I will view when high speed is restored

          3S is not enough.
          5S minimum

So let's say 6s on 5800mAh, would this esc be able to pull that many amps?

As I mentioned in that thread, like your self, I used what was kicking arround.

I put an 580 9L on 5S and it performed much better. The ESC you wish to use is up to you and your wallet. As this your fist FE boat I would suggest you use a high amperage ESC designed for marine use and stay away from cheap ones.
The setup of the boat, prop etc will determine your amp draw, as you have run nitro boats you know what a wet setup does, but on FE boats it puts a huge demand on the ESC

If you go to 6S, you will need a high voltage ESC, you will blow a 6S rated one.

Do you have a special esc in mind? I remember reading in your post that you were using the Castle Creations 120A on 6s 5000mAh, weren't that too much for both the esc and motor?

Is there maybe a quick way to finding out if the amperage draw is too much for esc and motor?

No... 5S and it depends on your aspirations as far as speed are concerned. The only way you will find out the true amp draw etc. is using a device like the Eagle Tree which will record amperage draw and many other items as they occured. The prop is the demon in this equation.
As Gerwin mentioned 5S is the minimum and you will need a high voltage ESC on 6S and above.
You must start off with a prop that will not cook the ESC, motor and baterries.
I suggest an X440 and check temperaturers after a one minute run. Search this site for optimum and dangerous temperatures.

I would start with 5S, and once you're used to the boat switch to 6S.

Okay, so 5s on a 120A HV esc.

What brands of esc should I look for? I hear bad and good things about the CCs, what's the verdict on those? The Etties seem good, but are as the CCs a bit pricey.

Thanks a lot for all the help so far - really helpful!

The ESC you choose is really up to you, as all have their faults, CC has a great warranty and you are dealing with a North American company. The "best" ESC is probably Schulze, but they are very pricey. I suggest it is a toss up between ETTI and CC and you may wish to go to a higher amperage, as this will give you some headroom as this your first build
