I dont know Andy.. but that boat is labeled the UL-10.. Looks like you are missing a digit?
Well, the KIT was part number UL-1. That one is the first pull out of the second vacuum mold. I had a red one (Pocket Mechanic, UL-72) that was the second pull out of the second vacuum mold. The other yellow one (UL-125 Wildfire) I ran was the first layup in the glass mold.
Confused? Three molds were made. First was for glass, second for vacuum and just had some deck features added. Third mold had improvements on the deck. Never finished the fourth mold, which would have improved the sponsons. Randy Naylor owns the first vacuum mold, the glass mold was destroyed, and the second vacuum mold is lost in the Bubba's cavernous Lanier in Georgia.
The drawings take me approx 8 Days, and many hours to complete each one.
I guess my next drawing will be of a boat.
Glad you like them!
My experience with RC has included Tamiya "Boomerang", "Grasshopper"
Mugen "Bulldog", TL-01. I still have the Boomerang and TL-01.
F1 27" Tunnel with 3.5 K&B O/B and tuned pipe (Cutaway skeg).
26" .21 Nitro Mono Vee.
Now the new electric boat is nearly here.
Used to be part of the Sydney Model Power Boat club and I have raced against American boaties at ORAN PARK in Sydney outer west about 20 years ago.
Here are some more pics. If you want better resolution ask and you shall recieve.
The original files are almost 380mb!
This forums looks to be the hot ticket for all things RC electric boats. Might as well use this thread to introduce myself. That's me at Lake Tahoe in 1993, 1/16 scale Dumas Thriftway Too mahogany wood build electric on the tool chest.
I've been involved with RC Boats since 1976 or so (but not active by any means over the last 30+ years).
I bought my first boat from Gary Johnson at Hobbies Galore way back in the day. It was a built up hull (on consignment maybe?) Dragon Fly 20 for sale - all painted with metal flake and all. Gary had it for sale behind the counter. I used to take the bus downtown once every week by myself when I was a teenager and put deposits on it until it was all mine. My dad helped me buy an "RS" radio system (little orange 2 channel stick ) for gliders and we installed this. I dropped an Enya .19 in it with a pipe and learned a lot.
I got bit by the bug hard...
So, next up was a Dumas Skaddle 20. The old Enya .19 really wasn't the right engine, so I upgraded to a Veco .19 with some McCoy parts. This was much better. Ok, bug really bit me now.
After this, around 1977, I was just starting my sophomore year in high school and got my very first job EVER working for Charlie Pottle at Marine Specialties. I had no idea, how kewl that REALLY was, but again learned a lot and milled a ton-o-heads, rudders, and everything - krickey!
Ok, the Skaddle 20 was a first time build and well, you guys know what happens, these get retired early for some reason or another. We took it one day to run up at Stevens Creek reservoir and the silly RS radio went phuey, throttle stuck WFO, and it center punched a home built canoe... opps. Thank gosh Dad was there. Talk about a political moment. I have to admit, seeing that thing wide open, half in half out of that father and son canoe build wasn't pretty. Neither was the conversation that followed. That ended the Skaddle 20...
I couldn't let this stop me. So, with the bug burning even hotter, Charlie Pottle recommended I upgrade to a "Dart V" 20 size fiberglass hull. I did, and enjoyed the sounds it made on full throttle. Red and white - very kewl hull. I set it up with full Marine Specialties hardware, the Veco .19, a pipe and all the goods. Now was the time I had to become a NAMBA member. I even ran it at an official time speed trial at the percolation ponds in Santa Clara. I think I got it up to a whopping 28 mph - Whoo!
While I was there at that event, I think I can remember Joel Johnson and dad Gary FLYING in this tunnel hull thing called a "Manu Kai" or something like that. Engine was waaay forward, and it had a short stout little bow that immediately swept back flat and wide. Just ran FAST and light. I HAD to get one of these... I eventually bought a Manu Kai hull from Gary and dropped my trusty Veco .19 in it. Great boat, but I was still very much still excited about just being able to do this hobby / sport and never really learned the "dialed-in" methods yet.
I've always been hooked on RC Cars and had some kind of kit or another throughout the years. After growing up, and all I never knew where or what happened to all my old gear and boats. Jump ahead to 1992, and I moved to Lake Tahoe. I thought what a perfect place to run an electric boat! Plus they used to race the real deal here in the 60s. So, I ordered up a Dumas Thriftway Too mahogany wood kit, and built up a 6-cell, 550 motor size, Hughey flex cable & hardware set-up, was a good little runner. Great fun, got me back into it. I originally built this to the box specs but later re-named this the "Tahoe Miss" even though it was the totally wrong kind of hull. Really too heavy of a build, it would come up and go pretty well, just got hot...
Thriftway Too kit, 1993 Lake Tahoe at Camp Richardson. Very shallow depth and CLEAR!!!
My idea to build a 1962 Tahoe Miss replica and have a light FAST hydroplane on steroids was still in my mind...
Ok now fast forward to about 2002 and I had the hair brained idea I had was actually going to scratch build a 1/10 scale vintage unlimited. What was I thinking ??? I ordered up some 1/8 plans from Roger Newton, scaled these down to 1/10 specs in illustrator and bought all the plywood, basswoood and an Astro-Flight 25 5 turn motor - WHAT A BEAST. I was going to build this per classicthunder, org, e-rcu.org, specs. As of today, I still haven't built this thing and all the technology and electronics have just zipped right on on by.
Wondering what's next?
I like the ABS CH shovel nose hull offered here. Affordable, hydro. It sure would make a pretty 1962 Tahoe Miss and could be actually built by this old fart. No worries to make it LSH or Class O ready, I can't barely wait till the ice thaws out up here in the frozen north. So, I got some good time to get started.
I'm sure you guys will help me along getting up to speed with all the new gear and options, I feel so left out. Sure would be a shame to let a perfectly FAST new Astro-Flight 25 Marine 5-turn motor just sit. All my charging gear is for NiCads. Thanks for reading and listening.
ps.. I still own the Thriftway Too

Reason: punctuation
lucky dog, nice shirt... So next year I am hoping we can meet up and see some of your club's races! I haven't anybody to race here in bone-chillin bozeman MT. Will be in touch!
Here's me and my favorite hydro at the '08 seafair. I couldn't believe I was actually touching the magnificent Oberto
I have a great video of the 94 Oberto flip at Tri-Cities. ESPN used the film from my camcorder for their coverage (I didn't shoot it, a buddy did). It was great - Mike had it running like a model down the back chute, nice and light. Just a little too light, it turned out. Probably the fastest that boat had ever run. Oh well.
