Trying to understand ESC's a bit more

I came across a formula somewhere the other day, Im pretty sure it was on OSE,
about discharge rates. The formula was:

    mah X "C"rating / 1000 = Discharge rate

That being said, running 5000 mah batts @ 30C your discharge rate is 150A? So, my question is, is that in relation to what the ESC is? So if Im running a PB ESC that is a 45A ESC, Im overloading it by 105A? Something doesnt seem right about that.... or is the discharge rate specific only to the batt??? This is baffling me because Im trying to look at it several different ways and dont think Im applying it correctly...

    Thanks,
    Scott

PS, sorry if this is a dumb question..... sometimes its easy to overlook the obvious.

It is what the batteries are capable of. Not what you are using. By the way, good run on your cat.

let's say the cells are 30C/60C 5000mAh, that means that you can use these particular cells at a max constant of 150 amps and short bursts of 300 amps

Scott, that was not a dumb question and as Dom replied it is what energy you want to take out of the source...high amp draw motor...big prop..ESC not rated for this voltage or perceived amp draw.

Douggie, are you stating that the PB ESC "not rated for this voltage or perceived amp draw???

I really would like to get an eagle tree or something similar soon so that I can understand whats going on after the hatch is taped down. I think that would help me in several ways.

Another thing I was doing last night was looking at twin cat set up, as this is what I want to build when situations allow. I was going to do a twin HOTR, but, I really want to do a HPR 115. Ive got a CT04, but thats gunna be a gasser. I was looking at set ups on HPR fanpage and noticed one had Fiegio (sp) 8xl's on 5S doing 107kph (High 60s mph) on 442 props and an Etti Navy 150 (2-7 lipo). I know the FEcalc isnt dead on, but according to it, in a single drive set up, that set up would overload the esc. I also know twins has advantages and disadvantages, is it becasue its running twins that it is not demanding as much from the 2 ESC's together?

Again, if you havent figured it out, Im trying to learn as much as possible before I dive into a twin cat build. Its still waaaaay on the back burner, but I can smell it....

Not familiar with the ESC you mention. All I am stating is to err on the cautious side on all electrical components your ESC should see at least 20% under their published specs. If you wish to push the window???

            Edit

An Eagle Tree is the best investment you can purchase!!!

If you are on a budget a single drive is the way to go on a cat. Twin drives are very cool but expensive and the HPR hulls deserve the best of components
