I haven't opened my new Leopard 3674s, what size bearing is required for replacement. I assume the bearings for a 540 Feigao would work - but someone must know the specifics. Thanks!

I have plenty of precision measuring devices but they do me no good unless I open the motor and remove a bearing to measure. No part numbers are visible from the outside of the motor. If no one knows the size then I'll have to open the motor, which I really didn't want to do until I have the bearings. Opening the motor flat-spots the rear bearing and ruins it so the motor can't be run until I have new bearings. Thanks for the help guys!

Hey Jay,
Sounds like you had better just get out the can opener!
Guys, Jay knows what he is doing. He just wanted a direct answer. He's prob looking to replace them with a higher grade for saws or just cuz that's how he wants it.
Most likely the same as the 4074 motors, 5mm x 16mm x 5mm but, I'm not 100% sure.
Most of the 540 cans use 5 x 11 x 5mm size bearings. Thats what I have found with the Nemesis, Hacker, Feigao and Keda's over the years. But I dont own any Leopard 36mm cans so I cant say with any confidence.
Leopard used 5x13mm bearings in the earlier batches of their 36 and 40 series motors. They then just decided to go bigger to 5x16mm. Now sure what revision you got so you may have to open it to have a look. 3mm is quite some diff in appearance, pretty easy to tell even by naked eyes.
can someone tell me what's the proper procedure to open up a leopard motor?
I unscrewed the 3 screws, but the endbell is still rock solid on. Do I have to hammer it out? :)

On a solid piece of hardwood on a table you should be able to carefully tap the motor shaft on the wood with the motor in hand to break the press fit or light CA glue. One seal is ajar, tap lighter until the end pops out of the case.
Thanks I succeded taking it apart in the meantime. Did a bit differently though. I held the motor in hand, but used a copper hammer to hit the shaft and it worked.
Next question: where do you get your replacement bearings from? And is the ceramic bearing hype worth the extra $$?

I buy my bearings and bearings for a buddy from a local guy. He's older and crusty and says "go ahead and spend extra on them if you want but, these are better in the long run...." I think I paid $10 each for some Japanese VXB bearings.
Thats thats pretty much all he sells is bearings.
If they were that great maybe Lehner after decades would be putting them in their motors. Wish I could get some of those bearings easy...
