    Gens Ace Lipo Concern

I just bought an aquacraft ul-1 superior. It's my first rc boat, I've had rc cars and trucks but have been out of the hobby for a little while. Anyway this is my first time dealing with lipos and brushless motors. I have been looking through this forum a lot and came to the conclusion that Gens Ace are the best bang for the buck lipo battery out there. I went to a pond the other day for its initial run and the solder joint on the prop shaft broke so I lost the bottom part of the shaft as well as the prop. I called up the hobby shop I bought it from and they told me to bring it in. Brought it in and they guy that was helping me out was putting a new shaft with prop on(free of charge since it happened about thirty seconds into its first run), and we started talking about the boat and lipo batteries. I asked him if he had ever used Gens Ace before and he said he hadn't but there was a fire on their indoor track which was started by a Gens Ace battery. I am new to lipo batteries and I am concerned after hearing this. Should I be concerned or is there anything in particular I should do to make sure I don't have a similar problem? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Also in the brief time I was running the boat I felt that the boat was not steering enough. I realized after it broke that the D/R was on its stock setting. If I turn this up should it give the boat a considerably greater amount of steering?

I would bet the fire started because of a crash and battery damage. All Lipos are subject to this happening.

was there any detail to the story other than a gens ace caught on fire? if you use them properly, youll be ok. like any other battery before it, there is a risk of fire or explosion.

There was not any more detail than that. I just asked him if he has ever used them, he said no, and explained there was a fire. That was it. Should I be concerned?

Do you by chance have a UL-1?

Ive used GensAce packs in my UL1 with a 2200kv outrunner with good results. No problems at all with the batteries. I also use them in my Wraith running 2s2p with no problems. I wouldnt worry about using the batteries.

You can check my battery testing infomation located in the "battery and charging" section of the forums. The Gens Ace packs are AWESOME packs and a excellent value. I've been slowly converting all my batteries including all my flight packs over to the gens ace and sky lipos. I love their performance. Without knowing all the details we can just speculate what actually happened. A cell could have been punctured, if his soldering job wasn't up to par something could have dead shorted anything could have happened. I highly HIGHLY doubt the battery just spontaneously combusted though!

Are the sky lipo's as good as the gens ace?

Please read up on how to handle and charge lipos safely. About once a year I read about someone burning down their house due to a lipo fire...

Most fires are due to improper charging, but there are also documented cases of lipo fires happening spontaneously in storage.

I charge my lipos in a lipo bag in the fireplace, always under direct supervision, and I store them in a woodburning stove....

The only question I have about lipos is how to determine the wattage necessary to charge a battery. How is it calculated?
