    project x

i brought this cat hull acouple of weeks ago on a spur of the moment thing.(o.c.d)
after some research as i couldnt find anyone who had built one found that it is a scaled down copy of the insane cat gen1
    its 29" long 13" wide
i put on a spare rudder and strut i had laying about and dropped in a 9xl on 4s with a x440/3 just to see if it was worth doing more to it or if it was a dud.
boat weighed in at 3.3kg (7.6p) so was rather heavy
any way dropped it in the pond for a run and was quiet surprised
it takes a little for it to get up but once it does it runs very nice and stable.
here is a few pics once i have stripped it back down and done some reinforcements i will shoot some video

The stand looks heavy !! I hope you have a good size ute to move it

Nice looking hull there despite my love for the long narrow Hpr look, must be the black and white thing with the colours. (note to Americans)

Good to see the 9XL was a go. Any plans on a big motor ( for speed) or will this be a play boat ( run time )
        See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

            Hi Ozzi,

            Here are my pics.

            This boat runs 6XL on a gear box and two 7.4 v lipo's = 14.8 v.

the 9xl with the 440/3 prop is not drawing many amps so i will try with a larger prop. estimated speed would be around low to mid 40s
it was mainly a test to see if it was worth doing more to as i want a cat that will run in the low 50s and turn at that speed.
iam undecided on motor not sure if to go with a 8xl or try a 580l
was thinking 580l as it does weigh a bit. but when it gets on plane it doesnt run like a heavy boat if that makes sense. i was very suprised how well it did run

                  Hi Ozzie,

Yes I agree it ends up a little heavy but seems to handle very well in calm and rough water.
I spent some time on the under side of the hull and added some carbon to the inside.
6XL on gear box and geared down 1.5 to 1 worked out ok and I was able to spin a 1.4 pitch 45mm prop.
Temps so far have been low for motor, esc and batteries.
This boat was set up to race and handle our rough conditions.
Over all I am happy with it

thanks thats what i was hoping to hear
if iam correct in thinking this is a insane copy then that would be the reason it handles rough water very well.
as you say it needs some work underneath. i have stripped mine back down and am in the process of adding c/f to the floor
its not the best looking hull but its diffrent from the norm

Mines just waiting for an Etti motor mount and a longer flex shaft.
Shouldnt be more than a few weeks..
I'll post here with my findings and videos.etc.

was going to start a new thread for this hull as there is few guys starting to run this hull but i may just change the title on this one
progress has been slow as i have had another project to finish off and had to sort out wich way i would go with the motor choice.
                        ended up with a 580 6l
gave it a run today with a neutral strut level with bottom off sponsons, ran really bad the back off the boat was all over the place and speed was low 70klmh,lifted strut and its getting better, speed jumped up but the hull is porpoising, think i need a bit more neg strut angle and move the c.o.g back a bit. once i get it close will prop up

Ah after all the Pm's I get to see what that 580L has gone into. What do you think of the motor? I love my 6L. Blew the 12L up on 8s though.
What did you have to do to the bottom? Was it even and true? and is there any hook in sponsons deliberately. Some pics of the hull clean up would be good for folks who have never blue printed a hull before
It is an odd looking cat but not in a bad way.
                          More pics mate

hi andy, i was going to pm you (again) after a few more runs, will post some pics when i can get some better ones took some on my phone so not the best and you cant tell just how big the motor is in this hull, just done some sponson work tonight, didnt do much just sqaured up were the transom meets the sponsons as it had rather round edges.
the hull sits flat on a table and seems even and true.
had a good check on strut angle tonight and i had lost the bit of negative i had when i raised the strut at the pond as i didnt have anything to check it properly so have added about 1/2 deg of neg to see if that holds the nose down a bit,the boat is very stable just have to get rid of the bit of porpoising.
as far as the 580l goes its got some balls compared to the 540xl motors.
i ran a pranther 220 to start of with and after 1-1.5 min running temps were around 30-35 deg, i think your suggestion of a m545 is going to be darn close, will have to order one when steve gets back
thanks for all your help will up date tomorrow when i will have more time for testing
                            cheers scott

Yep the 6L is a great motor for the $$$$, I have one in my sport 40 hydro om 4s 1p spinning from a m447 to a 447/3 with the hydra 240 and 35c packs it is one fast boat. No need for heaps of volts.
                              Look forward to the pics
