For all builders working on a hydrofoil...

For all you builders out there that are working or toying with the idea of a hydrofoil (yes all 3 of you), here's some of the best pictures I've seen of recent design in the past 2 years:

It's a sailing type, so the lift would have to be adjusted for RC, but the efficiency and design is very applicable.

As you can see it's very easy to capsize. Hydrofoils are exremely sensitive to water condition but cannot be beaten in speed.

Very similar to the hydrofoil ferries we have (flying dolphin)

Now you have a paint scheme Diego, and it can be considered both scale and FE LOL!

There was a smaller Russian version that was very stable. I had a link to it before my pc crashed some time back. But from everything I have gathered unless the foils are controlled by a gyro it is nearly impossible to control.

That sounds complicated, or at least too complicated for me.

Egneg, you have a good point about the gyro though. I didn't think about that initially, but then again, I haven't research either the feasibility or what had to be done to make this happen.

But, I'm thinking, all Diego needs is a few nay-sayers (not implying you Egneg), and he'll make it happen somehow, even if there is a trained monkey involved.

So true. Nay-Sayers somehow motivate me like nothing else on earth!

The canted foils look much like the Popular Science hydrofoil plans from the late 60's. It was pretty easy to build and worked remarkably well.

These hydrofoil vessels above a certain speed they are up in the air! It is not new design, I think 20+ years old and stayed like this

Hydrofoils in principle are not overly complicated.
For a required speed a lift funtion is designed in to the lifting foil.
The given speed is achieved by the props and engines.
                            The design is now complete.

Where we, as FE boaters, come unstuck is the thrust and lift parameters.
Most hydrofoils are set up to run at a regular/ constant speed for a long duration.
This does not sit well with the way we ( or at least I ) run.

As for gyro stabilised hydrofoils, my reading indicates that this is peculiar to the submerged foil craft such as the Boeing types. Very fast I must say.
The more conventional V style foils do not need MS computers and gyros to do the job well.

I have a few links to foil designs both model and full size. All a part of my research into what is, or may be, a fast hull.

Another thing I must add here. Multihull yachts are extremely stable.....upside down. I have recovered a few.
                              Full size, not RC.
