    30" Scratch Built Cat

Hi Guys, Just got back from the Cats first race. First heat came in second. Second
heat came in first and the Final it won by 1/2 a lap. There were several SV27, BL26and a couple of DF29 chineese copies. In the final race I was able to avoid the
carnage at the first buoy where a couple of SV27 and a DF29 tried to take the turn
too sharply and they collided and flipped. I was lucky as I kept to the outside and
made a wider turn at full throttle. The cat behaved perfectly and I am very happy.
I wanted to race the TItan 29 but it is Ammo powered and they will not allow
that motor in Limited Spec Offshore. The rules of our local club are as follows:
    26-30" Hull
    SV27, BL26 or UL-1 Motor and esc
    2S1P 7.4 Lipos X 2
    Any Propeller
It is really a fun class for people that do not want to spend a huge amount of
money. Next race next Saturday. regards
    Norman
PS, I will try to race the Titan 29 in P Mono next saturday but I will be at a disavantage with the Ammo motors against some Neus
and Feigao powered boats. Will let you know how I come out.

Norman, first off, well done on the race. I won't race because I am scared someone will hit my boat and then I'll lose my happies.

I just want to clarify the Spec class you run.
        2S1P 7.4 Lipos X 2
Can I assume that this is a series setup, so therefore 4S1P ?
If it is 2S2P then the kv on those motors is way low.

        4S make sense to me.

If I am a knob and have read this wrong then give me a blast

        Simon.

My cat's paint started to show cracks and after a thorough inspection, my rattle can paint job SUCKS! I just came back from a local guy who spray-painted a lot of RC aircraft/jets and he is willing to redo my cat's paintjob (at a price!) I am not going for the KOS theme anymore, but a simple Ferrari red theme with some decals/logo's applied. I am excited to see how she will look after a month or two from now...

                32" scratch built cat

Have started my 32" cat build from wood cut by Al Guzman.

After assembly of the frames and stringers, I looked at how to strengthen the hull using techniques from r/c glider experience.

In gliding, l balsa wings were the weakest, carbon fiber spars with foam cores and glass covered skins were the strongest, by a factor of 10+ to 1.

Adapting some of those techniques to the assembled frames and stringers, I added blue foam (Lowe's insulated 3/4" panels at $12 for 4'x8'' panel) between the frames forward of the motor mount frame, then sanded to shape. Epoxied 1/16" balsa to stringer/frame and foam as shown in the attached photos.

Next will be carbon fiber on the bottom planking of the last two frames of the sponsons and foam between the forward frames for vertical sheeting. Photos to follow.

The final build will cover all balsa with 1/64" birch ply and seal inside and out with polyurethane varnish.

Jes, what is the black stuff laminated onto your bulkheads, carbon fibre? That should be one stiff strong hull! Keep the pics coming...

The black stuff is BVM carbon fiber mat, probably weighs 2oz/yd. Epoxied under weight on flat surface before assembly. Stiffened the critical area around motors and transom during assembly. Did not have to enlarge slots in stringers to fit.

Will add 6oz carbon to motor mounts and transoms area for stinger drive and rudder during build. Photos to follow

                      Thanks for your interest.

                        Hi Guys,
Well the 30" Cat won its second race this saturday in Spec Offshore beating
a bunch of SV27s, Bl26, and a couple of DF 29s. Competitors in this class insist
on trying to turn like a Tunnel Hull. I just take a wider turn at WOT. I ran the
Titan 29 in P Offshore but I could only manage a 4th place. No chance with the
Ammo 36-50-2300. These were the boats that beat me. First: Skunk Works Cat
with a Neu, Second: Titan 29 with a Neu. Third: Delta Knock Off with a Hacker.
Will decide if to go back to a UL-1 motor and run in Spec or probably I will have
to spend some $$$ and get a Neu and new ESC, and some bigger Lipos. Keep on building these cats.
                        Regards,

Congrats on your first race! I'm wondering why your club cuts off at 30" though. Seems there's some cat hulls out there in the 31-32" range that would be perfect candidates. I'm running a chinese 32" hull with a UL-1 that does pretty well.

Yep, never gonna catch those NEU boys with an Ammo! I tried it in P Mono with a Nemesis 10XL and they just smoked me. Now I have a NEU in the DF33 but having problems with the esc so no test runs on it yet.

Hi Salir, That was my second race on the Cat in PSpec Offshore. During the next
meeting we are going to expand the size to 32" as a lot of members want to run
in the PSpec Offshore but have Head of the River Cat and Mono Hulls 32" from china
and they will change the rules. I think it's a good change. Have to get a Neu and ESC and 6S Lipos for the Titan as I was smoked Saturday. O could keep up in the turns but they blew by me on the straight. Planning now what Neu to get.
                            Regards and Thanks
