    47inch cat 3d print build

hello all, new here and first post along with my first 100% custom rc boat build.

i just finished up all the models and pieces to do a twin motor catamaran that 47.78in long. Printing is white ABS and I had to partition the hull and cover off into multiple slices and will have to glue up. I really like the design as a large portion of the hull is compartmentalized, the way the 3d slicer adds internal infill or support splits it up to smaller compartments so if you get a leak, it only in one small compartment like a 2x2in area. adding a couple pics one is the build plate with all my pieces for the hull and the other is from my webcam printing the left front section of the pontoon section of the hull. it's starting to do a division of the interior on the one side you can see.

any input and help is appreciated as i go along, currently looking at motors and not sure to go 40 series or 50 series........

just calculated the total hull weight from the sliced files and got 6.29lbs or 2855.46 grams, is this going to be tooo light?

I've 3D printed a lot of boats and boat parts. 3D plastics are weaker than traditional materials. Parts printed the way shown depend on layer bonding, the weakest direction. Joints are another weak spot. I would consider the 3D prints as the jell coat and lay up at least 2 layers of 6 oz cloth with epoxy resin on the inside. Well done this won't add a lot of weight and will considerably increase the strength. Boats like the one I made below show the strength of 3D printing, but still need internal epoxy glass reinforcement. This is not a highly stressed race boat.

i have been testing bonding ABS and ASA plastics with a couple methods and adhesives, i do plan on doing some sort of exterior finish on it, not leaving a raw plastic. was at a minimum going to epoxy or gel coat it, possibly some carbon fiber.

got the left front section of the sponson done. finish is good and some light sanding takes care of the fine lines. can see the cubic subdivision inside and structure to support the hull along with keeping it buoyant

Is it a "Skater-type" cat? Looking for files to print and make a plug out of.

this is the style hull I have scaled it much larger than the original file and tweaked the infill.

couple videos from printing today, left side of the canopy sliced into four sections as I had an issue when it was only two falling over around 380mm high.

most catamarans of this size weigh around 4-5lbs empty. getting it under 4lbs is highly desirable.

that's an estimated weight with the total print including supports and rafts that are created to print abs, I will have to slap it on a scale, hoping it has a more forward balance point empty. but also, not planning on getting into racing this one, I always wanted a large RC boat since i was a kid. i only had a 20in v with a small nitro motor in it, barely got out of its own way. then i had a airboat that was cool in the winter on snow and ice.
