so scratch the 8xl and go with 12xl or 13xl?

Here is some data from running my HOTR cat with different motors and props. My set up started with an ARTR HOTR cat. Twist was removed from hull. The sponsons still have some angle. I added a layer of 6oz fg cloth to bottom as far forward is I could reach. I added another layer around motor mount. The front was foamed. The strut was drilled out for SV type bushing and I am running .78 piano wire drive. The strut is set at gap of 1/8” above sponsons. The COG is 8.5” from sponson end. I run 6s1p on 2 Turnigy 3s 5000mah 35c/45c batt. All run were with same batts. The esc is 200a Himodel type w/bec. (ESC setting 0deg timing and PWM 8k on all runs)

Notes on temp.
Feigao motor temp. continued to rise up to 140 deg. F just sitting. I take this as stator temp is way higher than the can temp. I never trust can temp on 2 pole motors. I always do 10 second finger test on end bell of all motors.
Neu motor was run with silicone SV type cooler. Not the most idea cooler. This is all I could fit with motor mounts.
The thing I found most interesting was the feigoa peak amps was lower than all other 4 pole motors. I always thought a 2 pole had a higher peak amp load than a 4 pole.Attached FilesLast edited by suckmywake; 06-11-2010, 01:24 PM.Comment

Excellent info there. Now maybe some people will understamnd why their 90A or 120A ESCs fry with these sort of setups.
Like you, I like to run the Himodel 200a as it is twice the current capability of what is being used.
Just one thing though. Zero timing is not the best for these motors. Any chance of doing another set of tests with the timing at least 7 degrees. Some even suggest up to 15 degrees. You will probably find less heat & more speed. I know I did at 7 degrees on an 8Xl on 4s. I've no experience with the other motors though.
Would be interesting to see the difference.
Cheers.

Yes I plan on increasing timing to try to get more speed. I am first going to trying to get ESC temp down for longer run time. I have an ideas that is going to seem wrong to a lot of people about water cooling a electronic device. I would like to keep on using these esc and not switch over to my CC 240A. I ask Dave @ Lightflight a while back about timing on ARC motor and he said keep @ 0deg. If any one has suggestion on timing please let me know. To get info on timing is one of the reasons I posted the wye winding info on ARC motors. I think all motors execpt Feigao can take more timing. Also I would like any input on PWM of ESC. I once read that incresing PWM of ESC helps temp of esc for a higher temp in motor. Does any one know about PWM of esc and can explain it to me?Comment

Last week on vacation I decided to try some different props.
Stock HOTR square flex drive.
SV27 motor
70A ESC that came with the ARTR boat
2 - 2s 5800 Turnigy (4s)
I was able to get 40.9 mph on the GPS with an X440/3 but after about 3 min. of run time the speed controller stopped working. Temps on both the ESC and Motor were around 179. Way to much prop for this set up.
I need some suggestions on a new set up.
I have a Turnigy 120amp ESC
I would be happy with low 40's
I Want to run 4s
These are the motors I have laying around that I would like to use.
Nemesis 540 11xl 1516 Kv
Feigao 540 12L 2,159 RPM
Stock BlackJack Motor and ESC.
I'd like something that will give me decent run times and won't be running full throttle all the time due to the running conditions.
Anyone have any thoughts if either of these motors would work better?
Thanks,
Tom
Update on this post, SV27 motor bearing went that cause the ESC to failLast edited by tomstoys2; 04-12-2011, 12:56 PM.Comment

If you're going twin: (this is my setup on Das Boot - a 32" HOTR)
The 2100Kv's on 4s w/a pair of K40's and 120a amp escs, use a soft start if you can, you will keep the amp draw and heat much lower. Most heat is created during acceleration. You can use the Sea-King 120a ESC to pair with the Turnigy 120a. They are both hobby wing. Just make sure they are both version 2. Might even get away with a pair of 90a esc's since it's a twin.
I also have a pair of 2700kv's on 4s w/32mm props going about 55 tops w/60a ESC's. It's a fun setup, but flips real easy at that speed.
I have two more of the same size hulls I'm building for the same purpose as you mention. Sport, 40+ mph and good run times. There's a few guys here with some good setup info on this hull.
If you are going to stay single:
Get a T180a ESC and a Leopard 2200Kv (or Castle) and 38 or 40 prop on 4s
=)
Hope this helps!FighterCatRacing Team CHING BLING - Ching Bling. Brilliant, Advanced Sparkle for your hull.Comment

I'm suprised that the sv motor couldn't handle that 440/3. Out of themotors you have I would say the nemises xl motor would be best. The lower kv and the longer can will fair better in a heavy boat.If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed!Comment
