I hate coremat, it is cheap and easy to use as it is an even thickness and drapes over 3 dimensional curves pretty well, but it provides no strength in itself, it just soaks up resin like a sponge and the resin provides the strength, you'd get just as good strength to weight if you built up the thickness with toilet paper.
However it does do its job as a core in spacing 2 surfaces apart to stiffen the composite, and it is hard to get it off so if you have it in already you may as well put it to use by glassing over it. No need to use a lighter or stronger core as well, you already have the weight and strength limitation there, adding extra core will do little for you.
