PADDY STOP!!!!!!
Be very very very careful, I have a Spektrum AR500 receiver and only recently found out that the problems I have been experiencing with the 2.4GHz system is not only related to a large portion of the hull sitting under the water at rest but also because 2.4GHz cannot penetrate through carbon fibre easily, the only reason the signal is getting through is apparently due to the lid not being made out of CF. In addition to this the CF weave in the hull contains Kevlar (the yellow you can see in the CF), this is another big no no.
I have had 3 crashes and all related to poor signal, i.e. motor still turning after the throttle pulled down, now it all makes sense. My brother in law has the same system with a Paul Williams ply construction so far he has not had the same problems.
You might have a better system than I but please please be very careful, I am currently changing mine such that the antenna sticks out of the hull. One of the sparkies at works thinks the small antenna is the pickup and the long one is the ground, I need to dig further in to this to find out which one is which and therefore needs to be outside the boat.
Please be careful – it’s not fun being out of control with the throttle stuck on.

I thought it was pretty well known the carbon fiber and 2.4 don't work well together ??Also don't let something like a large tree or embankment get in between your radio and your receiver as they are also thick enough to block signal. 2.4 is pretty much a line of sight system

You are both correct but if you look at the rather poor quality picture of the receiver you can see how the antenna is raised above the receiver. The antenna is protuding up into the hatch cover quite a way. The R-1 system has a fail safe and I have set that to dead stick if there is a loss of signal. Range checks will also be done on land before the boat goes into the water.
Your advice is good advice so please do not think I am ignoring it. The XtremeLink system has a range of up to 8 kilometers if you wind the power all the way up (but yes that is line of sight distance).

I still think it would be a good idea to have the antenna outside the hull, I have performed many many many range checks and all of them were successful. The Spektrum has a very good range check mode and every time I have performed them on dry land they produce better than adequate results, the Spektrum also brags similar range line of sight. Mine is also programmed in fail safe mode, but it did not stop the past 3 incidents, 2 related to open throttle and one related to the rudder. Trust me now I know, it all makes sense. Think about it!!! the hull is only just above water level, water will null the signal and so will the CF, that only leaves a small amount of signal through the top canopy.
Seriously, do not use it inside a CF hull (not sure about the trees, I have never tried mine in a woodland area) But this could be good advice for the extremist

Slim do not panic, this is not a Spektrum. They have been found to have some on water problems. The system Paddy is using is very strong and the way the antenna works it will not be a problem. The problems with CF are real but the small amount in this hull and please note that the antenna does NOT touch or sit on the CF and is not totally enclosed in CF like say a composite carbon hull. Paddy has done his home work on this and with his many DECADES of experience I think he has it covered well enough for you to sleep at night Slim although watching your xs3 build the rest of us are worriedComment

I beg to differ from you Andy, but if you own a Mr Krabs hull you will notice that almost all of the hull is comprised of a 0° Carbon Fibre, 45° Kevlar, 0° Carbon Fibre, 45° Kevlar + inner 0° Carbon Fibre / Kevlar mix mesh, equating to 1mm thick mesh of very strong carbon fibre / Kevlar composite hull, not that I have designed many components with the composites of Carbon fibre or Kevlar mesh for the automotive or aeronautical industries.
Mr Krabs has a hatch not manufactured out of carbon fibre or Kevlar hence the ability to send and receive the signals correctly.
You might regard the Spektrum system as inferior but it operates the same way as any other 2.4GHz system.
My word of caution to Paddy still remains the same – Be very careful – on the box it looks good but inside the stomach of Mr Krabs it could be bad.
Yes you are indeed correct my history of boat building is not as good as yours and I do not have “DECADES” of experience but I am not worried nor should you if my krap boat building has managed 58.4MPH with a rubbish Chinese motor, ESC and LiPo then my new Neu motor setup should improve on this.

Mr Krabs was tested with the new 2.4ghz radio and everything went OK. Best speed was 84kph because of rough water. Things are looking good and I am wearing a smile.Several boats in various stages of destructionComment

ive been reading this thread with great interest as there is not much info on Mr Krabs.I have raced nitro boats in the past but this is my first FE hydro(excluding my mini Y, mini bat and mini cat).
I purchased the XS3 as a turnkey deal(add lipo and rx) from Andrew Gilchrist at
Fastelectrics.com .Im in the process of test runs at the moment to get used to the incredable excelleration.

Welcome and thanks for your post and pictures. I got my Xzess 3 from Andrew too. Like you I started out in nitro boats and progressed to FE.
How is that 1515 1y motor going in your hull? I have one in an Xzess 2 and although there is still some more speed to come with a better prop I am surprised how good that motor is.Several boats in various stages of destructionComment
