Last time I tried to use spackle compound on a Whip cowl I ended up throwing the crap out the door. Never seems to work for me. Others swear by Byron filler so I got some.

    I'll find out tomorrow.

I found out I'm ok at mixing epoxy but, laying it down with a brush is useless, never get a nice finish to lay down and sags etc.... oh well... I'l sand it down again tomorrow and maybe see if it can be buffed after wet sanding. I like the look of wood.

I have better luck applying the top coats of epoxy, un thinned, with a piece of old cotton T shirt.

I would change the canopy if I did it again. There is a build by my friend in MI, Pete I think? Shooter is his handle. He thought it out better than I did and used a UL-1 Canopy. I'd also change the 2 inner stringers and make them taller like Shooter did.

This canopy is causing me a delay. Somehow I have to add extra wood to the inside 2 stringers so I can tape the hatch down decently. Problem is I don't have a compass to trace the contour onto spare wood.
The tub external width is 4-1/4" wide and because of the bulge on the Starboard side it's almost impossible to make a tape down hatch without adding extra material like others have.

I'm temped to just buy a piece of 1/16" wood to tape down and make a bulge for the motor.

You see, it's not a hard build if you can stand over top of it and see things I can not since I'm always sitting. Add to the fact that I could not do any sanding through one of the longer and colder winters I've seen in years. I'm so far behind it's not too likely I'll have all the boats ready that I wanted to for MI on the 22nd!!

This is what someone else did and my only option unless someone else has any ideas for me???

Ray I cap appreciate you dilemma. I have had to work sitting down the last couple years and have caused myself a lot of rework. Being able to stand over it and see the whole picture is huge. I have the boat set on ground now when not working on it so I can sit on stool and look down on it to prepare for the next bit of work. I scrapped almost $100 in carbon fiber sheet and a too many wasted hours before I figured out what I was missing! Getting it put back up on the table is another thing. All in the name of fun.

How the heck did you template the tub to make it wider?? What a pain. I've started with paper but, it's not easy...

Yeah, life's a Beach then you start a lipo fire... Just Kidding.

I sanded all the epoxy right down, I'm going to use a T-Shirt or cheesecloth like Jim did:
I have better luck applying the top coats of epoxy, un thinned, with a piece of old cotton T shirt.
It's sealed still with a few light wood spots so a thin coat using t-shirt will do fine but, before that I'm building up the tub wall. Just making a template now. Slowly figuring little tricks out...

Hold the wood strip along top of hull and against tub then trace outline of deck using compass. Cut out using band saw or cheap scroll saw. I think I used 3/8 thick bass wood 3" x 36" strip.... purchased at Hobby Lobby

I'm still digging for the compass, got the material. Thanks for posting. I've also got multiple 1/2" x 1/8" to bend easier around the nose and do it in layers maybe.

I used a stubby pencil laying flat on it's side to mark my paper template, I'll try on wood next if I find that darn compass.

Thanks for your build thread, with luck I'll have enough drive and energy to get it done and some testing before MI, God willing. As long as I get good sleep I work well but, it's been a battle as well, whaaaa, lol...

Kids had a long roll of drawing paper. I cut a piece long enough and traced an outline of the hull then used it for basswood.

After all that pattern making I said, WTH, why not just take my two 3/8" x3/8" sticks put them in boiling water and bend them into submission. Sure enough it worked. Now I'm drying them out with heat gun and then gluing them on. This is far much easier than making patterns, even a compound bend worked out well! Hopefully I can glue tonight or it will be morning.

Glued sticks on after that dries I'll sand them flush with the tub top. I also added CF/Kevlar cloth to the battery area, glued in servo mount, setup linkage. Tomorrow I'll add the motor mount, stuffing tube and hopefully mount the turn fin. Last will be canopy trim & fit, paint it quick with some Molotow Graffiti paint, Vinyl trim on the sponsons and a battery strap, plumbing, etc... I can get'r done. I'll do a T-shirt final coat to the whole hull, wet sand lightly Tuesday.
                              Pics later, tired.

Ray, Does your original Whiplash cowl have a raised area on righthand side. Some people cut out and refill this area with fiberglass to help it fit better and easier to tape .
