I started a "twin" as in two boats, thread last year for the two Daytona hulls I have. These were supposed to be for coworkers, but tomorrow turned into next week which turned into next month...well we are in a new year! One of them just wanted one for a toy. The other was serious about it, but got hurt at work a while back. So I took it upon myself to build one of them to my spec. I have everything I will need int he mail.

I dropped it.

Should I just chop the tip off and maybe start with a small block of balsa? Suggestions from some of you pro builders would be greatly appreciated.

I figured that this was far enough to show. I just have to work on the servo/rx side.

#1 Offset clamp location, not sure if this is a good idea.

I don't think I did too bad. The tips are pointier than before too. I actually got rid of the needle edge just for safety reasons.

Now it's ready for a repaint...but GA weather decided to freeze over night. Monday was in the high 60's. It is sub 30 right now.

The repair looks good. The motor and esc plate is a great idea. It will look great. I am messing around with the same hull. The offset may be better as height is an issue in the hull. I wanted to mention about the height of the esc plate and being able to get batteries in and out but looking again it appears you have thought it out. You better get a copyright on the design as it looks good enough to use! Joking, but you have given me something to think about to improve my approach. Keep up the great work!
I hope your Co-workers didn't leave you having with the cost of both boats! Being nice can get expensive!

Thanks, I had to make some adjustments to the esc side. The entire assembly was just too long. I get my motor today (4/17) so I'll have a better perspective. I did get a quote of $44 for the old design. That included the servo tray, which I also modified.


I also attempted to add the carbon inlay. I could not get the cloth to stay attached to the sides of the tunnel so I pulled it out. But instead of wasting the cloth, I covered a 1/8" balsa sheet. I'll use that for the bulk head I'll eventually add.

I guess I'll sand the epoxy in the hull down tomorrow and try again. I'll try spraying 3m77. Either that or let the epoxy get tacky. The downside to laying the epoxy in first is that you can't really reposition the cloth without stretching it.

My soldering gun blew up. (Good, it was a piece of... Weller 100/140.)


I also increased the motor's angle from 15 to 20 degrees. This hull just doesn't all that much lengthwise space to work with.

This is a 2 layer inlay using 2x2 5.9oz. After I sanded the inner hull down after my previous mishap, I sprayed 3m77 onto the CF cloth. That tacked it around the corners excellently. Let it sit for a little while, then brushed WS105/206 on it. After a few hours, I put down a second layer. The second layers hides almost goes up to the hatch bolts. I'll brush more epoxy once the first part cures.

The bulk head is finished. All of the parts are sized up in the hull. The canopy/hatch easily clears the extra 5 degrees. It all looks good to me.

Looking great, nice attention to detail. When you did the inlay how did you tackle the rear of the boat near the transom? Just wondering if you put some cloth down over the humps on the port and starboard side first. Trying to figure out how to keep the inlay simple. I have some coremat but am concerned about using it because of weight and It being a single motor. Are you going to have the motor and esc mount made? You mentioned a quote if $44 and I am very curious what your approach will be. Thanks

Thank you Fella. The inlay actually stops along the edge of the rear. It does not go over the humps. This was my first time doing an inlay and I didn't want to complicate it. As for weight, I used two layers of 5.9oz. It is some pretty solid stuff.

Yes I will be ordering the motor and servo mounts. In fact, I just ordered the 90 degree brackets, but they are coming from China (10-20 days). It will be made from 4.5mm acrylic/plexi for the rails and motor plate, and 1.5mm for the esc cover and servo plate. It is kind of expensive, but whatever right? Do it right the first time. Have no regrets later.

I added resin to the dry but tacked cf. The lower section of the bulk head was glued in with it. I also coated the inside of the hatch with epoxy since there were loose fibers are sharp spots. The K looking thing is just for kicks.

My soldering iron should be here on Wednesday. The wait is tough.

Looking good, that whole rear section looks like a bugger to tackle! The cf looks good, getting the excess resin out is key to a nice cf job. I am only looking at stiffening mine up for this season to help take any nasty spills, not make a beauty queen out of it. I have another build that is sucking the life out of me so the genesis will stay simple! I am looking forward to seeing the custom motor/esc stuff in the acrylic, I have never seen it done before and it sounds very cool. Waiting must be the hardest part.

I'm with you on the beauty queen statement. My reasons were for a little extra strength, the opportunity to play with cf cloth for the first time, to get rid of the rough fiberglass texture, and just to get rid of the yellow. I tried to use only the necessary amount of resin, but there are a few areas that are a little deeper.

What are you going to equip yours with?

The place I am getting my stuff laser cut is closed till Tuesday. I hope it comes out as intended. I made changes to the design and layout which should bring the price down by a few bucks. The acrylic should be able to bond to the hull without issue. If I must be honest, the "proceed to checkout" is the hardest part.

I've been having some paint issues over the past few days. There was/is some very bad blistering. I believe that it is a result of "old" (not completely cured paint and new paint. I'll sand it down later then let it sit till Thursday before I repaint.
