    M&L GP400 Next ? Help

I've got a GP400 hull , now I'm ready to install the hardware and then paint etc...

I have alot of questions and hope Mike L and others with knowledge on this hull join in. I thought it would be good for other newbies doing a GP series hull too. This is my first wood boat, that I have to do it all. This is a beautiful boat and I dont want to mess it up.

I'm going with a NEU 1527 I have a motor mount designed specifically for the Neu. Its a really nice williams thru bottom of hull mount, my only prob with it is that it didnt come with a template for hole pattern and holes in mount already tapped so it has to be dead on. No real big prob, I will make my own template. Just not exactly sure where I should place the motor in this hull.

Got a MBP 8mm to .187 coupler, very nice. My question on this is, Ive heard that the 8mm shaft motors not as responsive as the 5mm, is this true and is there that big a difference ?

I've got a Speedmaster round bottom strut, several questions on this, its got a bushing. Would a bearing style strut be better suited for this boat ? From what I've read strut setup is around 1.5" is that from bottom of transom to bottom of strut ?

Rudder, should I mount it to the outside of turn or inside. Seen pics with it on outside, but read where it was possibly better if i mounted it to the inside and why ? and that it performed better with the rudder cut down, how much ?

CG, read it should be around 1" from heal of sponson, newb question but is the heal the very end of tear drop of sponson ?

Ive 2 custom fins ordered, one from Dick T (va craftsman) other from Mike (mhardware) both come highly recommended. Looking forward to seeing what the difference is between the two.

Tks in advance for help and im sure there are others who just read and not ask that would like to see the answers to these questions.... DJ

Clarification: This hull was built by Mike L of M&L Boatworks....

Since you bought an 8mm coupler I would assume you have an 8mm motor; build it an run it! Personally I wouldn't worry much about 5mm vs 8mm...

DON'T OVER THINK THIS. Stick with the brass bushed Speedmaster strut/stuffing tube set up. It's fast and it works!

What to Mike's build instructions say? Personally, my rudder goes on the left side of the transom (looking from the rear) and it turns with the best of them. However, I will also say I have seen some great running boats with the rudder on the right side of the hull (again looking from the back). Build it and run it! You can always move it to the other side to see which you like better.

Mike should be able to answer this for you...

This is an odd comment... I always thought that Mike was using Mr. Tyndal's on his hulls anyhow. I will be interested to see if he is manufacturing his own.

Build it and have fun! Q boats are really fast and fun to drive. Aside from destroying the hull most things are fixable with wood boats.

Mike B tks...there is no instructions regarding hardware installation...The Mike I was referring to in the fin statement is not Mike L its another known fin designer from west coast...No I dont have the 8mm motor yet, thats reason I was asking about coupler, would rather buy another coupler than to find out later that I should of gone with the 5mm instead of 8mm...again tks... Hmmm... I am sure that he will have suggestions since he's done the design and testing w/help from others on the hulls. At any rate, left side works VERRRY well on my Phil Thomas Q sport hull.

Oh yeah... I has one of Mike's fins on my P-Limited Sport Hydro. The only way you can answer the question is test, test, test... (I wish I had more time to test!)

If you have a choice in motors... buy the 8mm if you have a choice. However, I wouldn't hesitate to buy and run a 5mm (shaft) motor. As a matter of fact, I have a 1527 1.5D (5mm shaft) motor that I plan to run in my Q sport at some point... test, test, test...

Yup a whole lot of testing coming up ...I do like doing that part too :)

One thing I want to make very clear..I love this boat and I think Mike L (M&L Boatworks) is bringing back the art of building your own...Well Done Mike L.... Im a long time Plane builder and Yes Im spoiled, Plane kits normally include a full size plan that you build on...shows cg, motor thrust etc...I personally would pay the few more dollars for a kit that had something like this with it to show me where I should be considering mounting the suggested hardware....got alot to learn here...again tks... Just woke up and saw this. Let me get on my computer and go through all your questions. Right side rudder mounting is now the prefered choice tho! More soon, Mike

No real big prob, I will make my own template. Just not exactly sure where I should place the motor in this hull. You will want to place your motor and batteries in a location that helps get you CoG correct without having to add additional lead (if possible). See CoG info below.

Got a MBP 8mm to .187 coupler, very nice. My question on this is, Ive heard that the 8mm shaft motors not as responsive as the 5mm, is this true and is there that big a difference ? I have never heard that, and a Neu 1527 is such a workhorse I cannot imagine it would make much of a difference in a heat race setup..SAW...maybe..I would prefer 8mm over 5mm in a motor that large tho.

I've got a Speedmaster round bottom strut, several questions on this, its got a bushing. Would a bearing style strut be better suited for this boat ? From what I've read strut setup is around 1.5" is that from bottom of transom to bottom of strut ? Less resistance is always good, but not sure who makes a bearing style strut anymore. I will put it this way, I used a standard Speedmaster 3/16" round bottom strut, 1527 1.5d 1500kv motor on 6s..x457, and the boat radared close to 70mph...not sure how much faster you would need! haha

Rudder, should I mount it to the outside of turn or inside. Seen pics with it on outside, but read where it was possibly better if i mounted it to the inside and why ? and that it performed better with the rudder cut down, how much ? I prefer it on the right side. Enough racers have convinced me of this. With todays quality turn fins and steering servos the rudder can function properly on the right side.

CG, read it should be around 1" from heal of sponson, newb question but is the heal the very end of tear drop of sponson ? The heel of the sponson is the flat plate in which you mount your turn fin too...not the end of the tear drop.

Ive 2 custom fins ordered, one from Dick T (va craftsman) other from Mike (mhardware) both come highly recommended. Looking forward to seeing what the difference is between the two. I have never seen one of Mike Hughes..I do know this tho, Dick Tyndalls work, and work extremely well. I would go with what I know works perfect on this hull!

Thank You very much ! ...reallly appreciate you taking the time to answer all those questions Mike...Yes 70 mph is plenty fast enough :)...right side rudder mount I assume the right side looking at transom not bow....strut 1.5" from bottom of transom to bottom of strut ?..

I will post pics and vids as I do the rest of this build....Im still trying to come up with an easy method of painting this one, kind of hate to cover up all that beautiful maple grain its got to be honest.... DJ

Strut depth needs to start out 1/8" deeper than the depth at the sponson heel. So if the sponsons are 1-1/8" deep, then the bottom of your strut needs to be 1-1/4" deep. I cannot remember the exact depth on that kit off hand, but I am sure you follow me. Thanks, Mike

No cowl locks...just tape...just remember to add floatation inside the cowl just incase it does come off...

I will also be using 2- 6S 5000 Hyperion packs...Mike says there is plenty of room for them.....
