    Whiplash 40 Q Sport

Ok. Finally started this one. Not sure if I really needed aNOTHER project!! (3) boats and some crown molding in the house will pretty much consume me for the Michigan long winter.

Maybe dumb, but I noticed my 6S batts would not fit in the whip. So.... I cut some new middle frames and added some height. There's just too much $$ tied up into the (4) 6S batts I bought last year~!

The cowl will have to be sleek such that the taller middle section won't be as obnoxious. I'll probably vacuum form it.

After a few builds now, I'm really liking this contact paper method. You can ensure every frame, joint, transom, etc... is square without building a jig. I just keep shifting and moving things until everything perfectly matches the gridlines. I may still have to build a small jig for the front section. I'll see how it goes. When I was a kid I used to just draw a centerline and go. It's amazing how much twist you can still have in the middle!

The transom was badly warped, so I just cut a new pc out of 1/4" birch ply. This lady is going to have a nice transom, even if I have to cut it myself!

        Yeah, hey Jimmy.

So, I tacked in the temporary front pc to shape the nose today. The bottom framing is pretty much dead nuts square at this point, so I wanted to get the bottom mounted before I started twisting things around when I built the sponsons. The 1/8” spruce pcs were glued in place. Then, I sanded the bottom smooth and made sure that the front frame had the same profile as the bottom using a sanding block. I positioned the bottom several times and ended up trimming it just a smidge to make sure the sponson vent pcs fit nicely (this will make the sponson assembly much easier in the upcoming steps).

I'm starting to buy into Ray's school of thought with the 'pre-bending' big time. It really helps avoid any twist/distortion while assembling the skins.....even with a jig between the front sponsons (granted mine is lowsy).

I don't have a teapot (imagine that!). Wife has a machine that will make noodles out of zuchinni, but no teapot! So, I started using this heat gun mounted into one of my lathe chucks. Works great on thin sheeting! Super fast, and you even get a chance to burn your hands while doing it!

Things are coming along nicely but I'm starting to feel bad about abandoning 'The Pearl'. This new boat will be replacing her this year.

Glued in the turn fin mount, and started making turn fin bracket(s)???!!! I had some extra time at lunch in the machine shop. Used a fly cutter to finish the top and bottoms. Also used a really nice deburring machine to chamfer the edges. Definitely overkill.

Made some motor mounts today. The width of the center section is exactly 4", so a 3" rail mount system will work with 1/2" mounting blocks. I hate using blind nuts, but these should work fine sandwiched between a couple pcs of 1/4". I used a forstner bit to add a little relief to the opposing side.

Also started a project on the mill. I'm going to have one pc (4 bolt) transom mounts on all my boats this year. Strut mount will be threaded (2 bolts) w/no nuts. Looks cool, but way too much work.

Any updates, just tacked my frame together. Nice points in here, thankfully Oscarel pointed me here to check them out.

I would like to know the dimensions of that 4 bolt system since I could fab it up on my mini Taig mill. You started with U-channel aluminum and milled it for the rudder mount?

A couple quick updates on this one...

                          Sanding, sanding, and more sanding!

I added flotation. Not really sure why I do this. It's a fraction of what is required to hold it up.

Top deck glued on with the usual ridiculous-ness of weights, tape, and clamps.

                            I need more clamps....

Hey at least all the hard work is done for you! I'm still sanding etc... still working on the bottom...

Yeah, I just sanded all the edges of the decking. What a chore. Definitely for the birds. Do you have any pictures of yours??
