Papagriz's Shockwave 26 RS Scale Build

First I'd like to introduce myself. I am a noob to r/c boating, although I have dreamed of owning one since I first saw the Dumas 38KV ad in RC Modeler magazine when I was a kid. (That should date me pretty well ) Over the years I have owned mainly rc off road vehicles and a couple airplanes. I come from the rc crawler world where I have built a 3 time concourse winning scale crawler. To me rc models are all about scale and that's what is important to me.

That leads me into the purchase of my first boat. I have been doing research for about a year now and finally decided on the Proboat Shockwave 26 RS because it was the best compromise between scale looks, performance, and price. The look of it reminded me of the Dumas and from what I have read there is potential for up to about 30 mph. When I saw that it was being discontinued I decided I better get one now. My plan was to buy something to run at the lake when I am with the family and our Bayliner so a 60 mph boat is not something I feel I need (time will tell though), I am more interested in a boat that can run in waves at decent speed and look cool.

This forum came up in many of my searches and I found a ton of useful information here so I felt this would be a good place to join. I hope I can contribute something to it.

After purchasing the boat from my LHS I stripped off the decals and cut out my own graphics from adhesive Monokote. I then pulled the stock motor and put in an old Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem motor to see how it ran.

Last weekend we went to the mountains for a picnic by a lake and I took the boat out for a test spin. I didn't get to drive it much because my 8yo son was having a ball driving it around. It was fairly windy but the boat handled the chop just great. On 7.2v the speed was decent, I'd guess 15mph maybe, and with the 4500 NimH pack we ran it for at least 30 minutes. I checked temps and the motor was running 90 F and the ESC was at 109 F.

Now that my son and I are hooked I need to get him a boat also so I can continue with my build.
I now plan to build a more scale cockpit with driver figures. I am also going to have the ESC and motor cooling water exit the transom through some exhaust tips.

The Mag Mayhem worked well but I think I want a bit more speed. For power I'm thinking of the 2900kv Shockwave 26 BL motor, or something similar, and a Castle Hydra 120 ESC. I want to maintain the idea of one battery pack in the boat and from what I have read, that motor should work well for about 25-30mph. Hopefully I don't start breaking the stock props though.....

Tough crowd here.... I know, not very interesting yet. Especially for those who want to see performance stuff.

I was gonna order a new motor and ESC but I decided to buy my son a boat instead. We have a camping trip to the lake this weekend to take out the 1:1 boat and the r/c's so he needed his own. I am kinda in a rush to get some mods done and with my daughter having a drag race yesterday I only had today and a bit of time this week.

Today I made some styrene plugs to fill in the factory water inlet and outlet holes. I needed 3 because the transom is thicker so I had to double stack them. I went to Ace to get some PC-11 epoxy (read on here that it works good) but all I could find was the Ace brand marine epoxy. Hopefully it works as well.

While that was drying I went and put the new bimini top on the Bayliner for this weekend.

After some dry time I sanded the transom with 100 grit and then 600 grit and it came out nice and smooth.

Cut up some 5/32" brass tube to go through the transom for the 4 exhaust tips and the 2 new intake tubes.
I also covered the transom with orange Monokote.

In the second and third pics you can see the new dual pickup I built out of 5/32" brass tube. It's a bit bootyfab but I think it looks much better than the giant silicone tube sticking up on the outdrive. I'll see how it works and possibly make something nicer in the future. Once I'm sure it works I'll get rid of the stock molded pickup.
I was going to get some transom mounted water pickups from OSE but I keep reading that for slower speeds the pickups behind the prop are better. I'm not sure how slow "slower" is, but I figured that for a 25 mph boat this is a better setup.

And the paint is dry on the exhaust tips!

Once my parts come in from OSE I can finish the plumbing and put the electronics in.

I like it, looks good, Also a noob here (well for the most part) and also have a shockwave, but mine is the shockwave 26 BL. I bought mine with some drive shaft issues that i have now solved howevere still having hell with the set screws coming loose, imafraid to use any locktight because they are already stripped out for the most part.
I like how that monokote looks, its really shiny, i had hell with just the stock decals so i cant imagin how hard it is to do what you did.

I was having a hard time deciding beteween the the RS and the BL, in the end I went with the RS just because of the open cockpit. This one is going to be a poker run type boat, my next one will be a closed cockpit racing boat. I've read about the driveshaft issues on the BL, glad you got that solved.
I had a problem with my motor coupler but it turned out that the set screw was just too short and running out of threads. I installed a longer 3mm set screw from Ace hardware and now it tightens up perfect.

The Monokote was tough. I spend at least 1 1/2 weeks after work fitting and cutting them out.

Cool, Yeah i used to apply pinstripes and graphics decals on cars when i worked at a body shop but the Shockwave decals you pretty much have one chance and they do not install well if wet either but i did get mine on and they look ok for the most part, up close they look horrible or at least the bow and roof decals do.
Did your modded pickups help the cooling any? you didnt mention temps after your initial runs unless i missed what you said??

I have not had a chance to run it with the new dual pickup yet. I have an ESC watercooler on order from OSE and some Y fittings. One pickup will cool the motor and then Y out to the two exhaust tips on the starboard side. The ESC cooler will exit out the two exhaust tips on the port side.
We are going camping this weekend and that will be the test run for the cooling system and the new brushed motor I am going to try out. I will report back with the results.

Ahhhh i see i was thinking the exhaust tips were just for looks,,, may look odd with the water streaming out all four tips but then again may look really cool too!! I just did soem shockwave bashing in my pool, i think i got it on video, about to check it out now. would like to see how yours looks on video once you take er out!!

Yep, we will just have to see how it looks. You never know till you try.

Just posted the video in the videos forms here it is, Of course it involves many turns and not much straight running lol. this is on a 3600 NiMh Ive done no other mods except paint, i dont need it to run at supersonic speeds as you said you dont either, infact i only got this boat becaus ei got it cheap on ebay i really wanted a small micro that i could run in the pool, but the house just sold so i'll prob just keep the shockwave for now, ive yet to run it full out in open water but i will soon.

I've been running the same set-up in my SW26Bl(stock motor and CC120) and it is tons better than the stock esc. bump the timing a little bit and it will out run the stock boat
You will break the plastic props though, they ship the new bl with a ss prop PRB0154.
The big problem with the drive shaft on the new one is they made it longer to balance the cg and the apes at the assembly plant shoved them in and bent them. with the rs shaft you should be fine if you can keep it on the water.
With how accessible the bottom of the hull is you may just want to put some in hull pickups on it, would clean up the transom and you could remove the prop wash pickup arm.

JRockZ: your boat still sounds a little rough. If you're having that may problems with the set screws coming loose you should just order a new drive shaft and u-joint, PRB3152, and put some good loctite on it. I went through a couple before it got it right.

You are crazy, I'd never be able to run that fast in a pool. Looks good with the blue paint.

I ordered some plastic Octura X431 and Y534 props, do you think those will hold up or do I need to go with SS? Does the SS prop need to be S&B?

I've been eyeballing those pickups, I'd love to get rid of the silicon tubes going into the transom. I'm afraid that if I'm not running all out I might not get enough cooling though. Once I get the BL/Hydra in I guess I'll just have to see how I end up running it. Speed does tend to get addicting.
It'll be a couple months before I can spend much money on the boat, the end of the drag racing season is the most expensive so I have to wait. For now I'm going to tinker with some brushed setups I have. I've got an idea I'm going to try this weekend.
