Stephen's Insane 34 Mono by rcboatbuild

Stephen's been having so much fun with the FE 30 I built for him that now he wanted a mono to chase me around with. With a trusty Neu 1521 1.5D this should git 'er done

Speedmaster stinger (shortened some ) & rudder, OSE tabs & XL fins. Reinforced the upper rudder mounting through-bolts which miss the original backing plate when the rudder is mounted high enough so as to not interfere with tabs. All through-bolts sealed with gooey stuff.

4" rails (mocked up for now) and a wedge-shaped laminated piece of ply for servo mount. T-180 & Etti board on top of speedy ( bottom of Etti insulated from SC with G-10.) Tricky soldering job, but works just fine on my IB 34 Mono. One thing I'll say is that building a rear-motor mono with rails is mucho tricky to get everything fitted just right, but I prefer this setup because the batteries go closer to the centerline; can easily be moved fore-aft to adjust CG, and can be secured well.DSC02430.JPGDSC02422-1.JPGDSC02419-1.JPG

      Stephen's IB 34 Mono

Rails are mocked up; fabbed a laminated ply servo platform to make access to/changing servo easy; next is floor between rails for batteries. Straightlines this weekend so I'll get back to this after the race.

Larry, I made a template of the rail(s), in this case for a 1521 can in a Peter Zicha mount. If you want I can send you a copy. (Doing rails from scratch is ) !!

Rails are in. Battery box bottom ready for mounting. Quick nuts for battery hold-down post with added screws to prevent them from rotating - I hate when that happens ! Servo perch in. Holes drilled in rails under motor location pre-drilled to have servo & SC wires and cooling lines pass through to keep them neatly tucked away. Slow going with West Marine 24-hour cure epoxy for maximum strength.

Motor's in, flex trimmed & tip tinned, servo perch installed. Will epoxy in servo mount tonight; I use West Systems G-Flex 24 hour ; strong but time consuming. All wires & cooling hoses tucked tight to avoid that "bowl of spaghetti" look. Rudder trimmed & bottom sharpened. My "signature" dual water outlet/stacks - a little bling (and one tedious build!)

Very sweet build, Tony. You have some cool tricks you do on with your builds. As always, very neat and tidy install. She looks great.

Next came the hatch retention. Simple leather rivet works great in the front. Had to make wood mounts to properly locate the stainless speed-nut goodies in the rear to allow them to be inboard enough to allow room for taping on top. Had to make jig thingies to locate them properly while the 24 hr. epoxy cured. Trimmed some stainless bolts & covered them with cut-down vacuum caps. Grommets on hatch retain the bolts when unscrewed. Used stainless to keep corrosion from making them sticky when using.

Mounted rx pack switch in convenient spot. Made a nice clear battery hold-down cover with holes drilled to allow battery heat to vent. Covered hold-down post with silicone tubing to isolate threads from battery sides. Stephen's coming over today with the velcro for the bottom of the box & we'll add flotation.
