Dumas hotshot .45 build in progress

    Hi Guy's ,

Recently i started putting together my Dumas Hotshot .45 , i bought at the start of the year , at a good price . Being hesitant to start as this is my first scratch build , it is proving not to be too daunting . The paint scheme that i have in mind for it is the JPS F1 Raceboat , that was raced by Bob Spalding ( World Champion F1 1980-1 ) in Europe ( circa 1978-84 ) . As i consider myself a history buff , when it comes to Australian Raceboats , i was intrigued into building this race scheme from Roy Cooper's well documented website www.fastonwater.co.uk , the site contains stories and pictures from a time that i beleive is so colourful in paint schemes and characters such as Cees Van Der Velden .

Recently I have emailed Roy Cooper who lives in Oulton Broad ( N/E of England ) , which is one of the waterways Bob Spalding raced . Roy is following this build with keen interest , as he is a Brittish Raceboat Historian . plans are being made to send this build to Roy , so that way it can be ran on the historic Raceboat circuit in Oulton Broad . This may be a for first R/C Boating , though as it is a replica of Bob Spalding's Raceboat the trip should be of benefit to those in England that remember the late and great Bob Spalding , one of the U.K's true sporting icons and Gentlemen . BG

The .45 is 35 inches by 14 inch & voids will filled with pool noodle foam . Will also be fitted out with 6S set up , so it would great to hear from you guy's especially here in Oz regarding particular parts (BL motor etc ) as i want it near enough to be being 6S outboard AMPBA Spec ready once complete I know it's an older hull , though with it set up , i am sure it would still capable of being in the same realm as mod tech hulls in 6S class .....

So far i have carried out the following in order ,

    1) Sprayed all wooden parts still in their parts frame with enamel for waterproofing .

    2) Built a jig , for the frame to be trued, & used C.A to fix the cross frames in place .

    3) Attached side skins to frame which required a lot of working on , as Dumas made a mistake by not supplying side skins that were correct dimension . The hull required a bit of epoxy resin to fill uneven lines that were created by rectifying Dumas oversight ...

There is a bit of sanding to do next before giving the hull ( bottom section ) a light thinned out coat of epoxy resin ....

As i am able to progress on this further at the moment , i shall post updates every few days or so ......

All the best in F/E R/C Boating ,
    Brad

        Hi Guy's ,

Made further progress in the last week , which included sealing the hull Top & Bottom . Due to weight consideration i have put a light skin of epoxy resin on bottom of the hull & sides , & plan to just paint over top sides as they have already received a light coat of clear ....

Attached are some pictures that were taken with pool noodle type foam filling the voids within the hull , it took almost all of the 2 metre length i bought that was around 4 inches thick . At this point the hull weighs 1.5 kg , considering it will be 6s powered i feel it is weight is favourable to the pedantic :Sinking

Would be great if it inspired builders to consider boats that are built along the lines of historical raceboats such as this in Europe ( 1978-84 ) & boats that were famous in their time in North America ( just a thought )

          Back in black

          Hi Guy's ,

Been busy with completing the hull , which has been filled with a whole pool noodle - so positively bouyant & sealed !!! . Painted the hull in black which will need a couple of more coats - once sanded down to get rid of some imperfections ( see pics ) , which seems a shame for a nice wooden hull such as the Dumas , though the end result should be worth the sin of painting it black ( LOL ) .

Once i complete the paintwork , i'll have to see a local sticker maker to take proper dimensions & print the stickers i require ....

                Sponsored

                Hi Guy's ,

Applied sponsor decals the other day , & took pictures this afternoon . Really is coming up nice & should prove a unique model once complete , just need to complete paintwork by painting on gold pinstriping & clear coat over

Love the driver and his cool shades

So which outboard are you going to use Brad?

I had the maiden of my F1 couple of weeks ago and I am now hooked to F1. Already thinking of the Stiletto as my Xmas gift in 5 months time

                      Hi Guy's ,

Thanks for compliments , i really am a fan of raceboat history especially 1970-1985ish for the their aerodynamic lines & paint schemes . The Atlas Van lines raceboat ( sweet looking beast it is ) will probably be by next project as i have built this " JPS Raceboat " for my eldest son as he wanted a boat for himself . Painted on some gold pistripes last night while watching the Parramatta V Bulldogs NRL game , will need another coat as painting a lighter colour over black requires it .

The Outboard leg that i will use for this project will be the one Steve sells here on OSE.COM , as the boat has turned out rather well for a first time scratch builder , i feel i should buy a quality Outboard leg to do justice to the job iv'e done ....

As it will be powered by a 6s sport set up i would like to hear from you guys regarding ideal prop , was thinking of an Octura X645 for top end speed . Also i plan to race this boat with MBOFNSW in about 12 months so i'd like to hear from guys that are involved there as far as race motor & ESC used as i have only been able get to Sydney every 18 months - though we are moving to Penrith in the near future , so i am a bit distant though passionate about our hobby .....

                        Hi Guy's ,

Still finishing off Pinstriping , with positive results . Though i'd like to pay tribute to my decal maker as this prject needed some input by her , she has done such a great job & really has put the icing on the cake as far as this project is concerned . If you are a local Australian you may know of her work that she does on die cast cars such as Peter Brock's model 1/18th scale race car on Ebay , Lisa is capable of bringing your next project to life with the decals she makes . If you are interested in getting decals made , given the work she has done for me , i can highly recommend her : Lisa can be contacted @ http://shop.ebay.com.au/brookesmum/m..._from=&_ipg=25 if this this doesn't work just post it into your address bar .

                            Hi Marko ,

It may be up to a year before i launch it , as i have to a buy Leg & finish off making sealed electric compartment at rear of hull , as i am also renovating my home in Far Western New South Wales , it is a project i am working on that i am taking my time with . Also got my Apparition " Sport Runner " that i use as my primrary R/C Boating interest & as it requires a battery upgrade in the near future . Though i am glad i started this " JPS " project , as it is has wetted my appetite for scratch building wooden boats so i may concentrate on wooden hulls in the future .

Would like to know of a website source for Australian raceboats pictures that have made history , Pat Bourkes " Plus One " would be a great project for a scratch Ozzy builder out there . " Plus One " was a boat that raced in the Sydney Bridge to Bridge annual boat race in the 1980's , which held the record for the 70 mile river course for a number of years , finishing the river course in around 32 minutes & featured a nice yellow & black paint scheme .....

                              Hi Brad

I am currently building a cheap and simple balsa wood and do find it challenging but rewarding. Building wood boat is hard Yours look awesome

Here are a couple of pics of my F1 and OB leg.

Everything is sealed inside with a plastic cover (made from office folder) and taped before every run. The leg is a converted K&B. I have recently changed the cover to a wooden one made of balsa and sealed with epoxy.

                              Cheers
