Did some work on my verssion of an all in one strut / rudder tonight and I have to say that I am very happy with the way its turning out ! The bolt were my rudder linkage would pass through is for a brace that conects to the transom made from aluminum tubbing with some aluminum sleeves hammered in and then centerpunched 4 times on each end , super strong !!!! Rudder is placed even with the drive dog to stay in spec with D. Smock's record holding Rico....

I got my layup down now that I have my servo epoxy setting up...The CG is coming out really good and I still have a bit more wieght to add to the back end...Approximant CG in pic with 10,000mah of 4s, would be great if CG will allow me to put packs in the middle, will find out later as things come together...I can definatly put a single pack in front of the motor, even with a heavier motor.....I wieghed myself and then holding the boat and it looks like 8lbs so far, should end up wieghing between 8-8.5 when I'm done..

True that ! HaHa ! ........ I had a Titan a while back with a NEU 1515 1Y, 4s 2p 5.0's ,440x 3b , .150 cable, speedmaster strut with a custom made inline rudder on it and video with it hiting 53 mph and looking like it could handle more speed ! Oh, and also 100% thrusting at the strut !...lol....hardly any gap between drive dog and strut and a really long cable !
.....my most dependable fun boat ever...........my rico is my new sport/ fun boat..

Hughey .150 ! All I can say is my setup works for me. My idea for my cable is to eliminate forward compression by using thrust washers at my strut and to keep forward thrust there. Runing gaps is the reason so many use larger .187 cable when it isn't allways ( in my opinion) nessesary. .187 is nessessary if you are pushing your boat with the motors, also I think this is a very important point when considering your handling goals......The only strain my cable see is the prop resistance in the water and the minimal friction of the thrust washers...I can run a large degree of bend on the stuffing tube and not effect the boats handling compared to running gaps..........I could see this handling effect in your sprintcat and was still very impressed with the way yours handled......

BUT.... The forward compression is also caused by the torque of the motor spinning the prop against the resistance of the water. You cannot eliminate that. once the dog hits the teflon washer and the, the cable will still try to retract and you're just stressing it since it's locked in a collet and has no room to travel.

I like the custom work, very nice. The motor to the rear will give less drive shaft length and there will be less to compress.

Yes your correct ! However I don't adjust my cable like that. I basically put it all the way in with very little gap ( about the thickness of a razor blade) my setup doesn't give any forward thrust to the cable. I put a wrench on my collet and a rag over the prop and twist really hard to check shrinkage of cable and have found there is very little. Leaving a large gap amplifies cable wipage and all negative drag effects of a drive system in my opinion and pushes your motor in the degree it sits in the hull. When running large gaps motor placement is important because you can give your boat lift simply by this type of setup, or if somebody decides to do a mount with a negative motor angle with a s bend it would be possible to make the boat want to nose dive ! Runing gaps is benificial on hydros or boats that need lift in the back . .....Something for thought

Getting closer !

This boat has been a challenging build getting the wieght to the back so I could meet my goal of runing batts up front and center let me tell you ! I ran an external antena because of all the CF I have used since CF doesn't let radio signals threw ....Some of my wires I left long so when I remove the esc plate out of the way wires will allow...I have a m445 on the shaft for my maiden run....I plan on puting in a battery tray next .......This rico will probably be a 5s 1p boat later on , have been checking out the 1518 1Y ......For now I have Castle 1y on 4s....Should wiegh between 8.5-9 lbs when finished rtr.....

Boat ARTR and going to new owner.......

Thought it would only be right to post a few last pics of the Rico.....Its going to a new owner .... Really enjoyed building it but in recent time bought a Harley and made a deal with the Mrs. to retier from boats for a while .....


Rico stats: 8.5-9 lbs RTR with 4s 2p, batts in front of motor , CG 9.25'' , motor 5.25'' from transom , custom turn fins , custom motor mount and battery tray, floating stuffing tube, custom offset all in one strut/rudder combo, 1515 1y , 445m prop.. Pleanty off room for a longer motor too ...Look forward to seeing this one in action !!!!!!!! Talk at yall later !
