I wonder what a soldier returning from Iraq would think of Bill's thoughts on patriotism.
Some food for thought (obama)

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all."The Manx has been sitting dormant, but I think I finally have my motivation back. I hope to see it float soon.Comment

Well, first, they are not MY thoughts, they are quotes from some pretty well known people, so I fail to see why anyone would have a problem. Perhaps you missed the citations at the end of each one.
It is amusing however that you seem to be of the mind that somebody should not feel free to express themselves for fear of retribution. Why is it that this type of comment always comes from the right.
BTW, I am a veteran, and two of my brothers and my father also served their country. And one of my brother's is still in the reserve and is stationed outside Tikrit in an Army trucking unit. He drives in convoys on some of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Oh well. SOrry I broke my promise to stay out of this. Once again you have shown the futility of trying to present an opposing opinion.Don't get me startedComment

You are aware that the "under God" part was not added until the 50's as a reaction to the rabid anti-communist fervor stoked by Eugene McCarthy.
I also assume that you are aware that the pledge was written by a minister, who did not feel the need to have the "under God" in the original version as well.
Worse yet, he was a SOCIALIST!!!OMG!!!!!!!!

And as I noted above, how many of you "patriots" actually served in the armed forces in defense of this country?? It IS an all volunteer military now, so I would be shocked if any of you passed on the opportunity to serve their country.Don't get me startedComment

Bill socal,
"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" ???
Is that how you feel ???
Why dont you try and sell that to the families of those who have lost their lives in the name of patriotism defending YOU and YOUR right to express yourself in a forum like this ?
My brother-in-law is heading to Iraq for his third tour. Its a damn good thing he understands the real meaning of patriotism and isnt influenced by those who dont.
My and mine have ALL laid it on the line to preserve and protect this great nation. How about you??
And BTW - as I have noted elsewhere my younger brother is over there right now. And he also served in the first Gulf War.Don't get me startedComment

FWIW, here is the original wording of the Pledge of Allegiance as written in 1892:
I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. He was a Christian Socialist. In his Pledge, he is expressing the ideas of his first cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of the American socialist utopian novels, Looking Backward (1888) and Equality (1897).
In 1923 and 1924 the National Flag Conference, under the 'leadership of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, changed the Pledge's words, 'my Flag,' to 'the Flag of the United States of America.' Bellamy disliked this change, but his protest was ignored.
In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer.Don't get me startedComment

Wingers use God as an excuse, their propensity for violence and reciprocity is totally non christian. When I ask them about Matthew 5, especially verses 38 to 48 they start yabba dabba, dooing... lol. See "god" is generic, so by using "god" they can cover their warmongering ways by using god in the context the old testament presented "god" as, but they forget about Big J... But you know what, I'll be taking my lead spitter to heaven, there might be some funny stuff going on.
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
