You're right..I fail to see the point in making that particular comparison.
I currently have a Nephew over there.Any chance you have close relatives there now ??Next time you talk with them ask them what they think of your comparison...make sure you tell them "only 221 of you died while 295 Chicago residents did" and see how long they continue talking to you after that.

I think Darrin's point is that, in comparison, "over there" is not much more dangerous than "over here", and that is something you will not find on the 6:00 news.

If there's good news in Iraq, you won't hear it from the Media here. Only the bad news fits their agenda.

        Indeed...

The absurdity of these death comparisons is that they compare US military deaths to civilian murders in an urban area.

So Chicago has 2.8 million people and roughly 300 were murdered last year.

Iraq has about 140,000 US troops, 220 of whom died in the past year.

So Chicago lost 10 people per 100,000 while the US military lost 157 per 100,000.

And let's forget the numbers, I am sorry, but how can anyone believe that Iraq is safer than Chicago. How many of you wear body armor to go to the market? How many of you travel in heavily armed caravans? How many of you need air support to move about your city?

Honestly, it is beyond idiotic to try to make these types of comparisons. Plus they usually all fail to include the 600,000 to 1,000,000 NON COMBATANT Iraqi people who have died during our little fiasco in Iraq.

And BTW - my younger brother is over there right now. What he has to say about the whole situation does not have much in common with what the armchair warriors over here think is the situation. Cluster f&@k is his favorite term. And he is from Arizona and has voted Republican in every election he has ever voted in, so don't try to label him a liberal.

Final thought, I am weary of those who try so hard to equate being a liberal with being anti American. Such attempts are beneath contempt and in my experience usually come from those that have not actually served in our military themselves. Rush, Sean, Savage, O'Reilly, and on and on. True Chicken Hawks. Happy to send the other guy (or his kids) to die so they can spew their hatred over the airwaves.

I'll give you Savage, he's kind of a nut-job from what I've heard, or FAR RIGHT in the least, but the rest... give me a break... apparently anyone who reports anything outside of "approved" media channels is "spewing hatred"??? That is just rediculous...

And in case you are forgetting, Palin, McCain, AND Biden all have kids over there fighting... Palin isn't "spewing hatred", and neither is McCain or Biden... They are "spewing" the facts as they have them, and letting the voters decide.

Criminy, there is ONE TV channel and a small handful of talk radio out there actually telling the "other side" of the story, and revealing FACTS that the other channels won't look into (at least not until their ratings start slipping or they are "caught" with their pants down), and to the Left, it's "spewing hatred"...

Nice... THIS is what we have to look forward too... Coming from the same side that believed the "Fairness Doctrine" is "fair"...

              Bill,

One of my good buddies from work is in the Navy reserve. His unit was called up at the start of OIF. He spent the better part of a year on an oil rig defending it against attack. It was attacked several times, but not before sending several attackers to "Paradise." His unit came home minus a few.

He changed units so he could go back. He did, this time doing shoreside security. He saw guys blown up. The biggest problem they had was with ethnic Persians (say "Iranians"). His unit came home, minus a few.

He changed units AGAIN. He is back there right now for his third tour. Mind you, he's no spring chicken - he will face mandatory retirement when he gets back home this time. Again, defending against (for the most part) Iranians.

He goes because it's the right thing to do. The Iraqi people WANT us there - they realize that if we pull out, their own military won't be able to defend them against the Iranians who, surprise surprise, want the oil and port access, and ability to take Kuwait, and to shoot at Israel more easily.

Wake up, dude, not everybody over there went against their will. Some actually enjoy restoring freedom to people. People who, by the way, don't harbor animosity against us but against their "Muslim Brethren." (0's calling them that just shows how ignorant he is of their religion!)

Anyone that think the Iraq people all hate us and want us gone should try to catch a repeat of the season opener of little people big world. http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/lp...s-to-iraq.html The family that Matt visited, love the American troops. A lot of those people need us for more than just protection.

My brother served in Iraq. His response to me when I asked him about Iraq, was that the US military getting rid of Sadam was the best thing that could have ever for those people.

don't worry though, when obama gets into office, if he lives for very long, he will dismantle our military, and we will see another 9/11, but probably worse. Even better is how quickly he and the rest of the dems are going to pull funding for the soldiers in Iraq. that will do nothing but kill even more soldiers.

oh yeah, if you like being able to use your guns, I suggest you stock up on ammo, because it is about to become really expensive.
